Went to get Muhtars letters for myself and wife yesterday in Karsiyaka, and was charged 20 YTL for the privelege.

Don't remember getting charged anything last year -not even for the stamps.

Anybody had the same experience?

They charged from early last year, 10tl each, certainly we paid last march.

This I think has been standardised across the country as Karsiyaka used to be free, others paid in kind, others in cash.

When we were charged same in January I asked why and was told because he had to get the other two signatures now and they had to be paid - this was Alsancak. We'd never paid before either.

Catalkoy Muhtar only asks for a voluntary donation and leaves it up to individuals. He's a very nice man to talk to.

Malatya was 5tl each - before nothing.! They should pay us for chasing the muhtar around! Maybe one is paying for a valuable 'autograph'?

The Lapta Muhtars wife did ours. She didn't speak English and I was not sure if or what I should pay. I had a 20tl note in my hand and asked "how much" ? Guess what - 20tl!! Didn't mind though because the family clearly needed it more than me.

Interesting Japeal that you say Tatlisu don't charge anything - we went at the end of november and were charged 15TL (7.5TL each)! As far I know there are 2 or 3 muhtars in Tatlisu, trust us to find the one that wanted money.................... and we didn't even get a coffee this time!!!!

bootitsme,

the tatlisu muhktar near Aliyre, have now done had 3 yrs of letters, no charge. In fact on yr 1 his daughter who spoke english was horrified when we tried to pay and stated that it was illegal to be charged for letters.

Maybe rules can be interpreted differently muhktar to muhktar!!

That's good to know Japeal as we have so far only used the one up in the village that our neighbours told us about when we first moved here. I suppose 15TL isn't a great amount but it's the principle of the thing - I wouldn't mind if he even smiled at us as we handed him the money

Have paid 20 for years but always get smile, handshake and helpfull advice/imformation without having to ask which is worth the 20 on its own--- he knows more about the law than my lawyer and she gets a hell of a lot of my money for next to nothing.
