Is it possible to cover existing steps which are made from those thick biscuit colour oblong stone tiles, only its the dogs area and over the years the dirt has really ground in and I want something thats easy to keep clean. I know on walls for example you can lay tiles over existing tiles, but no idea about steps.

Have you thought about using non slip tile paint? You can get stuff that is water resistant. Somewhere like Marshalls might supply it. Must be easier/cheaper(?) and probably better looking than tiling on top of existing tiles.

If you tiled on top of tiles on stairs, wouldn't this shorten the tread and possibly make them dangerous. I think I would try the paint first before doing this. The butlers wife

You can bleach your stone to remove stains... clean off the bleach and allow to dry then seal them with Stonoseal... it brings out the natural colour of the stone.

Groucho I can try this system. Now am I too pour say 1 bottle of bleach or however many it takes (without diluting) on the steps. And Stoneoseal, is that from Marshalls? Other answer AS for the tile paint, Im sure the dogs claws will scratch that off after a while.

I would wear rubber gloves, apply the bleach neat with a pad of some sort, material stretched over cotton wool should do (a bit like a french polisher's rubber). Use a circular motion to work the bleach into the stone so that you don't get streaks. When it's done its work, wash off with water first then soapy water then plain water again. allow to dry. You can apply the Stonoseal as soon as the steps feel dry.
