Professor of art history Michael Walsh (Eastern Mediterranean University) showed the new film on DVD "Against the Clock - Saving the endangered heritage of Famagusta" after his talk "Between Empires: From Ottoman to British Famagusta". The DVD, which highlights the race against time to restore Famagusta's cultural heritage, is a follow-up of "The Stones of Famagusta" (by Dan Frodsham, Dr. Allan Langdale and Dr. Michael Walsh). The DVD costs 10 TL and all proceeds go to a Bogaz based animal rescue center (if I have understood this well - I'll check tomorrow and correct this information if necessary). I'll also try to find out where the DVD can be bought East and West of Girne. Here's the cover of "Against the Clock - Saving the endangered heritage of Famagusta": http://www.allcrusades.com/BB_pics/Against_the_Clock_72.jpg

Sorry guys, a misunderstanding - it is not for sale. The ATA evening was a one off. These DVD's are made for awareness of the situation, and as Michael was giving a talk it was arranged for people there, as a special privilege via the Mayor of Famagusta, to purchase them for charity. But more could be come available if there was a demand, as Michael says 'not so much for profit but for awareness.. If anyone feels they could so something useful with it, one could be obtained, or collected from the Belediye in Famagusta. Michael and the Mayor of Famagusta and others want the whole world to know the plight of Famagusta, that is why the film was made. Sorry Hans, but it cannot be bought anywhere. Try me! (no, I am not for sale but I can get copies)

yEA, WELL, depends on whether you are Anglicising it - happens in English, - whereas to locals it is Gazi Magusa - innit. Pedantic is fine, - just depends on who is reading, why and what for. Thanks.

RE msg 6, MarieB: (...) yEA, WELL, depends on whether you are Anglicising it - happens in English, - whereas to locals it is Gazi Magusa - innit. (...) => Ah! So Famgusta ( http://www.allcrusades.com/BB_pics/Fam_contact_info.jpg ) is the Anglicised form of Famagusta and the official name of that town in Turkish is not Gazimağusa but Gazi Magusa..? Thanks!

Oops, misspellings, and variations on an original linguistic theme. Never spotted Famgusta - so my proof reading skills are disappearing. But definitely the Anglicised form of Gazimagusa with the accent is Gaze Magusa (sometimes even called 'Magusa' )without the accent, and - ohb shucks 'Whatever turns you on?????'

Ah, MarieB..! It must be the heritage of thirty odd years of work as a journalist for an Amsterdam based Dutch newspaper, where typos, misspellings and abuse of the language were not appreciated at all...

Believe it or not, DC, I am in full agreement with you. I do not appreciate mistakes in my own language, and do not like making them in other languages either. I get very miffed if my own language is 'descrated', so I am very much with you. I am only too sorry if I am guilty - on a professional level, it is intolerable, but on a 'social' one, maybe pardonable.(and I said 'maybe')
