Here is a great article from the Cyprus Mail: http://www.cyprus-mail.com/opinions/our-view-futile-blame-game-over-refugee-property-claims/20100313 LAST WEEK’S decision of the European Court of Human Rights continues to be the main issue of public debate, which is no bad thing. After all, this was a wake-up call for all Greek Cypriots who believed that their property rights would be unaffected by the passage of time and bought the politicians’ myth that a settlement was not a matter of urgency. Unfortunately, the debate has avoided the main point of the ECHR decision, degenerating instead into a pointless blame game about why the decision occured. Instead we must deal with the hard choices presented to us by the decision. We either work for a settlement and ensure compensation, or we surrender the occupied part of Cyprus to Turkey and hope the IPC pays. The ECHR has even placed a December 2011 deadline on applying for compensation. After this, refugees get nothing.

Its shows why some are so optimistic on peace in 2010. But I think one factor is missing - the GC need to understand that the embago and lack of direct flights can not last forever. What possible interest could a Pathos hotel owner have in opening himself to competition with the comparative paradise of unspoilt Karpaz? This is holding up the peace process, they CG need to understand they will have to compete fully one day. If they do a peace deal is much more likely.

This point has not made it into the GC press. But it needs to becuase it is a inevitable step following the ECHR concern for Turkish Cypriots. For the GCs far better to bring NC in as a partner now rather than have her competitng with the Turkish Lira and a fully functioning economy and property market right next door.

It is also far better for the Turkish Cypriots. The flow of structural funds into NC will be outrageous. NC will be catapuled into wealth in a way that far exceeds what might happen if she stayed independent or as part of Turkey.
