Origin of the Templars, their short, unhappy rule of Cyprus and their downfall. A destruction, plotted by the Pope and the French King... Throughout history thousands of books and pamphlets were written about The Templars. In a completely rewritten lecture - with many pictures and maps added - Hans Doeleman (founder of the Medieval Cyprus Fellowship) will concentrate on the origin of the Templars, their short, unhappy rule of Cyprus and their downfall. A destruction, plotted by the Pope and the French King... The famous Order of the Temple, “Les pauvres chevaliers du temple”, or in English the "Poor Knights of Jesus Christ and the Temple of Solomon", which played so important a role in the history of the Latin kingdom in the Holy Land, and incidentally in the occupation of Cyprus, can only be truthfully described as far as its scanty records permit – the rest is speculation and fiction.

Within two decades of the victory of the First Crusade (1095-1099, when Jerusalem was taken), a group of probably nine knights offered themselves to the Patriarch of Jerusalem, Warmund of Picquigny, to serve as a military force or "legion", as we should call it at the present day. The group was led by Hugues de Payens, also known as Hughes de Payns, (in English: Hugh of Payens or "Hugh Pagan"), a French knight from the Champagne region, who lived from circa 1070–1136. He was the co-founder and first Grand Master of the Knights Templar. With the famous Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, he created the Latin Rule, the code of behavior for the Order. This small group had the mandate of protecting Christian pilgrims, who were en route to the Holy Land, to visit the shrines sacred to their faith, and the possessions of the Frank settlers. But was that all..? The two centuries of the existence of the powerful Order guarantee a fascinating lecture...

Sorry: I have made an error in message 1 of this thread. It should read: "On request of TRNC residents, who were not able to attend this lecture in 2008, Hans Doeleman (founder of the Medieval Cyprus Fellowship) will again deliver his illustrated introduction to the history and secrets of the Knights Templar (instead of: St Hilarion Castle).
