The answer to this has always been 'no' unless they can lend you a acr with private plates, ie without the tell-tale ered hire plates. Unless the procedure has changed recenltly, which I doubt !!!.

I travel a lot from South to North on a regular basis, but have a lease car. At the border you can get insurance for both private and hire cars. HOWEVER I understand that it depends on the hire company. As a rule you can easily hire in the South and travel back and forth, but in the North you never used to be able to. Somebody told me the laws chaged fairly recently and now you can hire in the North and travel South (dependant on the hire company). If anyone can tell me the DEFINITIVE ruling, I would be keen to find out as well as I lease my car in the South and I can get a much better deal in the North (already quoted so please dont tell me its dearer). Thanks in advance, Gerry.

Some companies in the North will allow you to take the car to the South - we did it late last year. Can't remember the name of the hire company but it is the one at the garage opposite the Colony hotel in Girne. However, you will need to ask them for a copy of their insurance and registration details of the vehicle as you will need them when you pay for insurance at the South cubicle. Paul
