Esentepe translates as windy hill or so i am led to believe . I have to agree that maybe in the future it will be a good investment . a first class golf course , a proposed marina , some wonderfull restaurants ,friendly people stunning drives along the coast roads . yes measey i totally agree.

Fabulous location along the coast road and the gateway to the Karpaz.

Free from any hustle or bustle with panoramic views of the sea, sky and mountains.

Gentle meandering progress will of course see changes in time, whilst for now it still takes my breath away and allows me to chill out big style.

Sorry - Couldn't allow the west is best comment go!

Seven years ago I lay around the pool at Riverside with a number of other English families who had already purchased properties in the local vacinity and were waiting for the completion of building.

To my horrror having given Hubbie a day off to go exploring he came back to say not only had he "bought" one but two in the wasteland that was the East of Kyrenia!

Seven years later - what a fantastic decision he made - we have a circle of friends that are not only ex pats bur some fantastic locals - we don't have huge estates that are empty waiting for the holiday makers to move in - the local shops don't rely on the three months of the summer calender to make their profits.

I don't imagine that all Westerners will agree that West is best but can I just argue that in our experience East is very much not the least""" I have never been prouder to say I'm an Eastender!

Deserted council estates???? i think the Esentepe sums that up perfectly.

I agree Golf course nice views

Now here are the bad points

No shops-no pubs-(to speak of) few restaurants, and a hell of way to get anywhere.

Essentepe - Gateway to the Karpaz? You are having a laugh!!

Really, I have lived West of Girne and also now in Bogaz, now I could really say that is the gateway to the Karpaz.

A fantastic harbour in bogaz and a short drive to the karpaz, Bafra and everything that is going on there and a new marina that is actually being built NOT proposed, and the best beaches on the island.

"There is a buzz going around that Bogaz is Best!!"

"No shops-no pubs-(to speak of) few restaurants, and a hell of way to get anywhere. "

No discos, no Night clubs...no car/motorbike/scooter racing, no ambulances wailing all night on there way to pick up the pieces.... the list of things the people don't want is endless...

We have shops, we have pubs and bars and there are more coming... rather a few good restaurants than loads of crap ones that open and close faster than you can book a table...

It takes me 20 minutes to get from Esentepe to Girne in the morning... we used to live in Alsancak and it often took that long to get to Karaolanoglu!

The west - so crap they have to build a bypass around most of it! So you don't have to spend too long trapped in it.... ;¬)

We have never regretted living in Esentepe.. and the only thing we would change is the lack of a border to stop Westerners turning up telling us how little there is here!

Plus, and this is a real plus Hippo, the dogs aren't keeping us awake at night.... ;

Does it really make any difference? Each to his own I say. Different areas have their own advantages and disadvantages. You would not want to be in the West if you wanted to be out on the golf course several times a week and if your social habits are heavily influenced by bar hopping you would not choose to be in the East.

Whichever you have chosen, chill out and enjoy.

Two expats

Totally agree, there are no bad places in Cyprus and it comes down to what suits your particular lifestyle. I did find when living in Girne that hardly anyone ventured much further than about 10kms of their own area let alone drive to Esentepe to see the lovely village and the restaurants there or, heaven forbid, they pack an overnight bag and discover the beauty of the Karpaz and the unspoilt beaches and stunning scenery.

There is a buzz going around the Bogaz is Best!

Breezy,

You are right... let's not crow too much about it... it's nice just how it is

BTW I'm given to understand that Esentepe really means 'Mountain Breeze' with health giving properties and not windy hill which is a poor literal translation.

Groucho, I think 'Mountain Breeze' is Estate Agent language.

Here's some alternatives:

Draughty Downs, Gale Force Creek, Brass Monkey Mount

Any more suggestions anyone :o)

Find it too built up for me with new houses not a good mix of both.

But it is opinion and if everybody like where we are then it would end up looking like Esentepe instead of the little fishing village with great locals and some fab beaches, lots of local interesting days out etc...........

East has to be best.

Ahhh now you are talking, Bangers and mash! Home made pie and mash, some good traditional favourites. These will soon be available at a new restaurant opening in Bogaz. It is called Bumbles Beestro and the official opening is this Saturday 27th March at 3pm.

All are welcome to come along free glass of bubbly and a bar bee cue!!!!

i knew that ) Thing is in Bogaz we have a good selection of restaurants offering traditional Turkish cuisine and some excellent fish restaurants too. What was lacking was a restaurant/cafe that could cater for some of us expats that get a craving for good old english food, like curry or Chilli Even the British Cypriots are looking forward to it opening. In the Girne area you have many such places to satisfy the craving. And like many Turkish who live in England they tend to go to Turkish Restaurants as welll as British ones, so variety etc......

That might be true if I was told it by an Estate Agent, but it was Huseyin in the Iktisatbank who told me and I don't think he's fluent in 'Estate Agent'.

We have bought an apartment at Crystal Bay Marina through Evergreen, near Estentepe and the complex is excellent. On site is a restaurant called Joya, very good food and always busy and more eating places are due to open this summer. Tony.

i know a man who has land and planning for shops near golf course, his plans are good , these shops have to be different .not like the one on the main girne roads, ones that bring people to the shops and use more than one shop.

so far the plan is rooftop restaurant/bar. snooker, poolroom for locals. bank ,chemist, reasonable priced mini supermarket, pizza / grill restaurant, carhire, big paved area for craft markets local produce,

swimmingpool and kids playarea with arcade games to entertain them, out door stage and screen for evening entertainment.

what do you guys think to this, could be up and running within 15 months , if they think its the right time.

room for more shops only the ones that bring in customers to work with the other shops

Market research?? Whatever next.

Started off well: 'these shops have to be different .not like the one on the main girne roads'

and then: 'so far the plan is rooftop restaurant/bar. snooker, poolroom for locals. bank ,chemist, reasonable priced mini supermarket, pizza / grill restaurant, carhire, big paved area for craft markets local produce'

Question: And these shops are different because .......?

Caesar Resort, Iskele has a superb cafe and Wendy (who used to be at Supreme cafe, Catalkoy) makes fantastic cakes along with pretty much any other dish you want. Nice to have a choice now though.

greenman,

shops are different because, they will be built in a square rather than in a straightline, each shop will be of use ,no shops like florists, diy stores, furniture shops.

it will be a focal meeting point ,somewhere to bank, food shop, pills ,walk down the road buy a paper have a quick drink, during the day.

night time pop out for a nice meal with freinds listen to nice music ,while the kids play.

or a game of snooker with your neighbour ,on a boys night out.

thats why it will be differrnt

Back to the original comment. I agree with items 1 and 7. Stunning along the coast road and far better to be the East than the west!. it may be quieter and take 10 years for the concrete blocks and bars to arrive - hopefully it will be 20 years! But, as has been said many times, it is a matter of personal choice for the individual and we are all different.

On a slightly different note modern though it may be, Tony mentioned the Joya restaurant.(message37) This is 10 mins dirive from Essentepe - excellent food and great steaks.

Just wondering how is the man who was injured in the garage fire in Esentepe? hopefully he's on the road to recovery, I have met him several times. Also is the garage open and if not where is the nearest garage other than going into Girne?

Measey, while your devotion to Esentepe is admirable (providing there is no hidden motive), your assertion that it will be the 'New Monaco' is frankly absurd and laughable. I now have worries about your sanity.

Esentepe is awful....always cooling breeze, terrible constant views of the seas ( which of course is noisey )...no restaurants..loads of building...stuck between a marina and golf course....nieghbours drink too much, no petrol station, inhabitants anti british...an hour drive to larnaca...mountains blocking the view...suggest you find somewhere else

It's fairly obvious from reading the posts of most of the Alsancak/Lapta/Karsiyaka dwellers that you have ventured no further into Esentepe than the coast road... If so you've missed it!

Turn off up to Esentepe village proper and you will find a lovely sleepy village with a selection of shops restaurants. By night the sleepy turns into a lively vibrant place where locals will greet you warmly... you can walk about taking in the atmosphere and enjoy drinks, good food and music in the local eateries.

When driving through the villages of Alsancak, Lapta and Karsiyaka it is difficult to see where one stops and the next starts.

Esentepe has as much rural identity as any of the aforementioned west of Girne places and it has the benefit of being distinct from its neighbours..

Measey,

Branston is a pickle, Branson is the Virgin Media man.

Now I understand the problem, all the time you've been writing Esentepe you meant Estepona.

Good golf courses, a stylish marina, lovely beaches and good restaurants.

Still not the new Monaco though :o)

greenman - excellent response

To be fair, I went to Estepona many, many years ago and found it to be a lovely place. However, with regard to the "New Monaco", well, I, personally, don't see it. But, I have been proved wrong many times, and who's to know I won't be proved wrong yet again? I have been on cruises, during which one of the ports of call was Monaco. I am sorry to say that, much as I love NC, Monaco, it wasn't. But, surely, that is the whole point? We have been visiting NC since round about 1990. It's a long time and there have been many changes; some good and some not so good. Sadly, and speaking from a very personal point of view, what made it unique, no longer exists. But, I suppose that's progress?

re Estapona- marinia run down and expensive, lots and lots of high rise, restaurants i agree first class, beaches ok but not brilliant, water is so cold even it height of summer you need a wet siut.

The biggest down side is the people are unfriendly rude and un reliable.

We know because we lived there for 4 years

Is Estepona one of the Costa Del Crime locations where all the wanted London gangsters hang out whilst on the lam?

Greenman,

I only asked a question, confusion arises when you don't have an inquisitive mind. I'm certainly not confusing Esentepe with Lapta or even worse Alsancak... 8¬) (smiley sunglasses on as summer is here!)

Cheers Measey,

I've enjoyed your postings, but then I always have liked the ridiculous side of life.

Thank goodness the English eccentric is alive and kicking in North Cyprus - well in Esentepe at least.

Happy Easter to you and long may your madness continue :o)

Hi Measey

Well I do have a sense of humour and also think that what we have in Bogaz is special, come to the harbour one sunday and I will buy you a pint ) Esentepe? Well it does seem a lovely place with fabulous views of the sea and the village is beautiful too. Like I said before there are no bad places in Cyprus I just hope it remains that way. I rememmber going to Pegia on the darkside about 10 years ago and thought what a lovely place it was, the same gentle sloping landscape as Esentepe that meant everyone had a sea view - then disaster! Just hope it doesn't happen here. So tell me 5 great things about Esentepe Measey ??? ))

Sorry about that folks some seem to be going a little bit of track.I think you will find Esentepe does not detract

from the idyllic coastel retreat that nestles at the foot of the Kyrenia Mountain Range, Rather that the Development that has come to Esentepe has Raised the Islands Profile and desirabilty.
