Well let's see... during Talat's tenure the ECHR has made a momentous decision in favour of the TC's and the TRNC..

It's probably enough to get him re-elected... who are the alternatives?

Eroglu, a man who appears will say anything to anyone to court favour, no matter that it contradicts his previously stated position! One minute the hawk, the next peacemaker... it's really difficult to see him as a credible alternative....

I don't think so... I hope not for the TC's sake. Mr Talat is a good pilot to steer the ship home... at least the rest of the world will see that TC's are willing and able to negotiate in good faith under the leadership of Mr Talat.

They now have the upper hand in the world's eyes let's hope they don't misunderstand the nature of their position.

You put it in a nutshell Groucho. Eroglu has no vision. The only thing he is good at is to use all the means at his disposal without shame to keep himself in power. You have to pretend to be on his side if you want something that you are entitled to by law. He makes a good shepherd.

Groucho and Elko are spot on.

Talat has taken the TRNC this far and genuinely appears to have the best interests of the TRNC and Cyprus as a whole at heart.

I wouldn't trust Eroglu as far as I could throw him !!

Lets hope that common sense prevails and that Eroglu isn't able to 'buy' an election.

Just my opinion of course

I agree with Ismet and Groucho - let's hope the voters do also.

Also (as far as I know) Eroglu does not speak english! I'm not saying he should, but I'm sure that Talats ability to speak good english helps him (and thus the TC people) to communicate and get their message across on the world stage. In my view Talat is winning the GC/TC battle in the talks at the moment, the last thing needed is for Eroglu to step in and give the GC's the excuse to blame the TC's for stalling in the talks

I think the TCs have to stick with Talat, now that they are so far along the road.

What % of voters are ethnic TCs, and what % are mainlanders - this could make a big difference to the outcome

Not a great fan of Talat but as things stand he is the best man for the job at this present time, better the devil you know... Eroglu will almost certainly take us back into time.

Wouldn't it be great if we could have a vote and influence the outcome

The current length of time voting rights take to be bestowed on immigrants here is really outrageous. I can't think of any other country with such a long qualifying period.

However, I must also say, I wonder how many ex-pats would rather vote for their favourite restaurant than do enough research to make an informed decision in the complex matter of TC affairs.... some would definitely need to be breathalysed at the polling booth!

Take take take take take. No matter who is voted in their policy will remain the same. Dont worry about all that unless you got nothing better to do. just get out there and enjoy the place.

What ever you think there will be very few of us that will be eligible to make a choice. TRNC's draconian immigration laws make it virtually impossible for us to become citizens.

talat is the best for the job. eroğlu had his chances a few times. always when ubp/eroğlu was in power trnc did not move forward at all.. eroğlu has no bakcup from turkey. if he gets elected say bye bye to a possible cyprus solution? Thats the fear behind the eroğlu election.

on the other hand, I think that even if eroğlu gets elected, he will get the "cyprus folder" on his tabe with the mark "we are here" and turkey will kick his butt to continiue from that point..

I also expect every country leader to speak english. If you are "leader" of a country, you should be able to communicate in an international language.. sorry, but this is the minimum standard I expect (from a leader).

lets see what happens

there other ways of looking at this important question

that does not focus quite so much on personalities:

for example,

some people yearn nostalgically for a less confusing period

back in the 1960's and 1970's, where a killinger or a black mak

were clearly "prime moovers"

...or were they really just the frontmen for very many others,

be they the mass of voters or secretive cliques?

in other words if it wasn't "them" it could be other names

yes talat has a good heart but he represents only one trnc strand,

while the gc administration has so far failed to grab this chance

...perhaps their last one to secure an honorable compromise

on the domestic front I'd imagine as president he has no influence

at all with the ubp in power

yet even like gorden brown he may still bounce back in april,

and nanny would not yet be issued with her p45 by the electorate

Would like Talat to let us know what he is discussing - how much of TRNC is he giving away - is he saying all troops out - not even his own members know what he is discussing - they used to call one another Comrade so that says it all for me - and a President admitting that he cried when we announced we were to become the TRNC - should be bloody ashamed of himself, he seems to be ashamed of being a Turkish Cypriot - you an guess my answer to question one is NO.

Rocking,

The end result will be put to a referandum on both sides, hence there can be no secret deal but if there is going to be an agreement, both sides will have to take some bitter medicine. "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scroundrel" by Samuel Johnson must ring a bell.

It was a big mistake to declare TRNC in place of Turkish Cypriot Federal State. We gained nothing but we lost a great deal. The embargoes began with this act and we were not allowed to sell our citrus to EU nor export the garments and many factories closed down as a result of this UDI. Talat could see all this happen and he had every reason to cry.

ELKO2, you got it 100% right!!! I dont understand how people argue: Talat is against TRNC, turkish cypriots, he sells TRNc bla bla bla.. .. he cried becouse we lost everything that day.. he was one of the few who understand this at that moment! hats off to talat!

This is a fact only few people are able to understan. noyt eroğlu or the basic people. They use this as propagand.. I fell sorry for them.. Information is availlable and free for all.. go get it!
