Has anyone bought a Tick Collar for a dog from a Vets?

If so how much did you pay?

Do you think 50Lira sounds alot?

Thanks Tinkie, It was just the way he said "they are very much money" and then seemed to just make a figure up.

Also it was not my usual Vet as she is away.

Hi Paul, Thanks.

Looks like he did put a little on top but at least Milly is protected now.

One other question, The vet said not to remove the two ticks she has now as they will drop off in a couple of days with the collar.

Is this right? I did ask him to remove them as one is large.

Hi tootie

You have to be very careful when removing ticks as it is very easy to leave the head embedded in the animal which can then become infected!! I would have thought that if any one could remove a tick safely it would be a vet tho...

This is why I took her to the Vet because I didnt want to do it myself, but he said they will drop off in a couple of days with the collar on.

Firdez and Pertev both charge 30TL for the Paraband collars. They are recommended for 3 months use for sandflies, ticks and fleas.

Sorry another question. If your dog has a Paraband collar does it still need "Frontlining"?

SuziQ - Petlife is in the bungalows behind Smart + furniture shop in Karakum. There is a road to the side of Smart + turn down there and Petlife is on your right - the last bungalow with the car park next to it. Hope this makes sense

Tootie The vet is probably right.

However if they don't fall off smother them with vaseline, they suffocate and drop off.

Use Advocate for my dog, bought with me from UK £30 for three pippets Probably have to resort to Front line now because I guess I won't be able to get it here. Still use the paraband collar though. better safe than sorry

Both our dogs have paraband collars but we also Frontline them as well. As Roblyn says, better safe than sorry.

I bought a paraband collar at Petlife today and I was told that you do still need to Frontline.

Despite using tick collars and frontline, my golden lab used to be covered in ticks. The vet suggested we put 2 garlic capsules daily in his food, piercing the capsules so the oil goes into his food. I brought odourless garlic capsules from the UK and it took a few months for the dog to be totally clear of ticks. Now I don't bother with tick collars and frontline as the garlic capsules are very effective.

Can you get the collars from the chemists???

Ticks - end of a cigarette - careful not to burn the dog!! If small use your eyebrow tweezers and as Lilli says make sure the head is out.

Best to try and get someone to bring from the UK if you can. We buy from Asda, Morrison's etc, and dogs have never had any form of infestations. Priced at £2 or so, a big price difference!!!

The Paraband collars are mainly to protect from 'lieshmanitis'(not sure of spelling) so even if you get things from uk you will still need the Paraband collars.

I'm convinced that much of the disease attributed to Sand Flies and leishmaniasis

http://www.pethealthinfo.org.uk/dogs/health_leishmaniasis.html

actually looks more like Canine Ehrlichia a tick borne illness from the descriptions of the effects.

See,

http://pet-diseases.suite101.com/article.cfm/ehrlichia

This is important because ticks are found outside the Sand fly season (May to Sept)

Frontline is the best for dogs, but as well as Frontline, when she is outside we spray our dog with Avon Soft & Gentle (the one with insect repellant) and it keeps the flies off her.

Point to msg 17, if you check out 'what not to feed your dog' you will find garlic is on the list of no no's.

Yes, I've used Garfields......he is good.....but his English is very limited, so take a translator with you.

He also does grooming.

Tootie- you can't beat FRONTLINE. I buy mine on ebay from USA and save a small fortune. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/8-months-FRONTLINE-PLUS-CAT-US-EPA-1-VET-CHOICE_W0QQitemZ280482383275QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item414e0d85ab

By the way, frontline for cats and dogs is exactly the same- only the dosage is usually different depending on the size of the animal.

Frontline does not work as well as Paraband collars...

I know this because my neighbours have had an ongoing battle with the Frontline company and a seemingly useless batch of their product, The Frontline people basically walked away saying nothing they can do... good PR? I don't think so.

Paraband collars only cost 30TL and last for 3 - 6 months although the vets often recommend 3 months as limit due to the weather conditions.

Our dog has never had one tick in over a year using Paraband and he is walked every day across meadows frequented by sheep and goats also on a daily basis. He had very long shaggy hair until a recent cut by Stephanie at Pertev's. They confirmed not a single tick..

However it's the sand flies Paraband keeps at bay too... and they can be a real menace to your dog.

The Paraband (called Scalibor in the UK) collar is effective against sandflies and ticks for up to six months. Frontline is effective against fleas, ticks and lice - but not sandflies. Advantage works on fleas, lice, ear mites, sarcoptic and demodectic mange, roundworm, hookworm and whipworm, and heartworm prevention but not ticks! There's also a product in the UK called Advantix, which repels sandflies for three weeks and is effective against fleas and ticks, but is LETHAL to cats, so my UK vet is very reluctant to prescribe it. I use frontline with a scalibor collar on the dogs in the summer, but have recently tried Advantage on both cats and dogs to see if it helps their ears, too early to say yet.

Just bought a collar today at the Green Garden Garden Centre/Pet shop. It is a Taber Dog - Collar Permetrina.

It states:

- protection against fleas, ticks and mosquitoes repellent

- Change every 4 months

it cost 30TL

Unless the collar contains deltamethrin (which as far as I'm aware only Paraband/Scalibor does, it won't be effective against sand flies.

Aristabroad

Can you buy the product Advantage here in N Cyprus?

My vet in the UK always prescribed Advocate for my dog dog.It addressed all the issues that you described in the Advantage product.

I've just used the last pippet bought with me from the Uk and was thinking Frontline would be my only other option here

I use the paraband collar also, changing every three months.I just want to offer her the best protection I can

As far as I know, you can't get Advantage in N Cyprus, but it might be worth asking the vets here to try to get it. It's produced by Bayer, which is a German company. I get mine from the UK, where it's a prescription only product so you need a friendly UK vet! Some of the UK online vet pharmacies might send it out here if you did supply a UK vet's prescription. I've used http://www.viovet.co.uk before for Frontline (no prescription required), they charged £10 delivery, don't know if that makes it cheaper than buying here, probably does if you're buying in quantity and with five dogs and ten cats I certainly am! If you worm your dog regularly and watch out for ear mites, I would think Frontline plus the collar would cover your dog for most things.

Update: Even with the Paraband collar on, Miss Milly is still getting ticks. But they dont stay on long, I have found 2 today but they were gone after a couple of hours.

Still they have left a small swelling of the skin.

She does not run in long grass etc,

I know its spring and too be expected.

So I would say the collar works to get rid of them but NOT stop them altogether.

Yeah, yuk... I hate the little blighters. As humans can get a form of Ehrlichia too, I really don't want them crawling around our home.

I was wondering if anyone reading this post has any knowledge/experience of the accuracy of a blood test for Leishmaniasis or indeed the cost.

Any advice very grateful.
