The date may have religious significance, but what is being celebrated tomorrow is Greek Independence Day.

The 25th March is a national holiday throughout southern Cyprus and marks the start of the Greek fight for independence from the Ottoman Empire which began on 25 March 1821.

In 1814, Greek nationalists on the mainland formed a secret organization called the Friendly Society (Filiki Eteria). With the support of wealthy Greek exile communities in Britain and the United States, the aid of sympathizers in Western Europe and covert assistance from Russia, they planned a rebellion in order to gain independence from the Ottomans. The start of the uprising can be set at 6th March 1821 when several Greek officers of the Russian army crossed the river Prut in Romania. Simultaneous risings were planned across Greece.

This revolt was soon put down, but the events in the north spurred on activist in the south, closely followed by Crete, Macedonia, and central Greece.

The generally accepted date for the start of the Greek War of Independence is the 25th March 1821, when Germanos, metropolitan of Old Patras, raised the Cross in defiance of the Ottoman authorities.

Here in Cyprus, Archbishop Kyprianos had been involved with Filikri Eteria since 1818, and when the revolt broke out, he encouraged Cypriots to go to Greece to join the fighting. He was soon arrested by the Ottoman authorities, and on the 9th July 1821, the Archbishop, three bishops and 470 important Cypriots were executed. Their mausoleum can be seen in the grounds of Phaneromeni Church in south Nicosia.

Independence was finally attained in July 1832. The day is marked by historic exhibitions and cultural displays in many of the larger towns and cities.

Lilli,

Western and Orthodox Easter coincide this year, and again next, before they go their own ways again. In 2012 there is a week's difference, but in 2013 it's a month.

RE msg 6, ianwfs: (...) Western and Orthodox Easter coincide this year, and again next, before they go their own ways again. In 2012 there is a week's difference, but in 2013 it's a month. (...)

=> Quiet a problem! But - fortunately - billions of people in this world have no idea about this problem. And they are wrong..?!

Ian,

Yes it is also a Greek National holiday, but Cyprus is not and never has been a Greek island has it?

The lady in the MOT office did tell me it was both but explained that the Annunciation of Our Lord Jesus Christ To the Blessed Virgin Mary was the proper reason and also the reason those keeping Lent are allowed to eat fish on this day...

They do not eat fish or meat of any other 'luxury' food for the period of Lent save for those days like today which are feast days for another religious reason... I would imagine that celebrating the last supper and Good Friday are such days.

Without Annunciation of Our Lord Jesus Christ To the Blessed Virgin Mary (today) there would be no Christmas, without Christmas there would be no Easter...

We tend to think of Christmas as the most important day of the religious year but I was taught to believe that in fact Easter is the more important... My old Anglican Priest/Headmaster used to say 'Think about it, we are all born but only Jesus was crucified, dead, buried and rose again ascended into Heaven for our sins...'

Groucho.

True, Cyprus is not a Greek Island. That doesn't alter the fact that the official holiday celebrated in the RoC on the 25th March is Greek Independence Day. They also celebrate Greek National Day on the 28th October. Have a look at http://www.centralbank.gov.cy/media/pdf/Bankholidays2010english.pdf

The holiday next Thursday is Greek Cypriot National Day, still commonly known as "EOKA Day". The holiday celebrates the start of the guerrilla campaign on April 1, 1955 when EOKA targeted British military and civilian installations on the island. It later also targeted Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot collaborators and informants. The holiday is celebrated in memorial services in churches and gatherings in cities and villages in southern Cyprus.

There is obviously a bank holiday on Good Friday and Easter Monday, but if anybody needs to use a bank, remember they're closed on the Tuesday as well.

Spoke to the lady today and her Annunciation of Our Lord Jesus Christ To the Blessed Virgin Mary fish dinner was lovely...

Don't forget, don't bother going south between 1st and 5th as many of the shops will be closed for Easter.

Hey Joseph, I'm having a baby!

That's nice, Mary. Who's the father?

Errrrrrr, God!

That's alright, then.

They were a lot less cynical in those days, obviously.

To my understanding from two sources, most if not all shops were open.

Groucho, you have always ben such a reliable source.

Ayway, they said it was absolutely "packed" and was a waste of time going!
