I think maybe you might want to provide just a little more information.

Also, are you allowed to tile it according to Girne by-laws?

You can, legally, cover with canvas, or clad with particle board covered in felt - we did the latter.

It maybe that tiles are classed as 'permanent materials' - seek further advice is my advice!

Do you want someone to visit you to provide a quote or do you require an estimate from suitable tradesmen delivered to you via this board. If the latter then some approximation of the size of the pergola would be of benefit.

If the Land Registry Office have been out and measured up and you have received your individual title deeds then no worries. If that is not the case then any extra permanently covered areas that are not shown on the original plans will cause problems.

I must say, I've heard many good reports about Bracey Builders and the quality of their workmanship.

Also, they are LEGAL!

This is most important, as if you employ someone without a work permit and an inspector happens to show up (probably as a result of someone 'shopping' your 'cowboy'), you, like a friend of mine had happen to him recently, was hauled down to the police station and fined £500 - no excuses. The police told him that even though you have a registered tradesman, it's your responsibility to check he has a work permit - and not just him - his co-workers, also.

So, even though a company with a work permit might charge you more, it's definitely worth the little extra - remember, that company has to pay, monthly, a whole heap of money to the government just to be in business - tax, accountant's monthly fee, healthcare contributions, etc, etc - so, of course they've got to charge more than an illegal 'cowboy'.

Please note: I don't know 'Gates' - never met him.

Agree 100% with Tenakoutou.....business should always be given to legal companies. The illegal people may charge lower rates than a legal company but as they do not have any outgoings they are in effect making more money than the legal guys. Which is not fair as it is very hard to make money here legally because of all the 'red tape' and taxes that have to be paid.

Also, when a company has had to pay 100.000.00 dollars to start trading why should the illegals get away with earning money with no expense to themselves?

I'll step down from my soap box now!!!!

Crofter/Msg15:

It's good that you got up on your soap box!

Perhaps many people don't realise that, for instance, a carpentry factory has to pay annual taxes on all its static machinery, piece by piece, and with all the 'red tape' and bureaucracy involved in setting up and running a business, not forgetting the iniquitous and crippling taxes levied on business people, it must be really hard for anyone in business to 'keep one's head above water'. Those that own their own premises do have more than a slight advantage than those who rent theirs. To bring a container of, say, wicker garden furniture from Indonesia, costs twice what it should, because of transhipment, the cost to bring it from Mersin to Famagusta costs as much as bringing it from Indonesia!

So, to 'get back on thread', it's no wonder prices (for your timber, Bankadan!) are so steep in TRNC.

Cont'd:

Giving incentive to business people is another vital neccessity for the government to address if the economy is to survive - never mind prosper.

Unfortunately, successive governments, their ministers cossetted in all their ill-gotten luxury, appear happy to sit back and take no notice of the worrying reality of what is happening to their country, their least concern seems how to rectify the deteriorating situation.

Who cares? - Turkey will bail us out! - After all, throughout history, the kings and the barons have drunk the wine, and the peasants have done all the work and the fighting.

Regrettably, this feudal attitude, if allowed to continue, will be the contributing factor to their downfall!
