| The Greek Cypriot president, Dimitris Christofias, and Mehmet Ali Talat, leader of the island's Turks, have welcomed practical progress in reuniting the island after 19 months of stalled talks. Today they attended the start of road upgrading for a crossing point in the remote north-west which should open later this year. It will be the seventh checkpoint across the UN buffer zone between the Greek south and the Turkish north since crossing restrictions were relaxed in 2003. Cyprus was split in 1974 when Turkey invaded after a coup by supporters of union with Greece. |
