Last week I was visiting and stayed near the new harbor. I was upset at the amount of moisture and smell in my clothes. Having lived in New Orleans, I am very familiar with humidity, mold, mildew and all the relating health issues. We will be moving over at the end of the month. Because we are renting, I am obviously more concerned with managing said problem as I am not the owner so structural correction is not an option. Perhaps the villa we are renting will not have this problem after all, but I prefer to be prepared.

Has anyone seen dehumidifiers being sold anywhere? Additionally, has anyone seen this product, DampRid, being sold? http://www.damprid.com/

Thanks in advance.

Air con units often include de-humidifier settings (usually it looks like a tear-drop)... so this can be used to solve excessive moisture related problems...

On ours this only appears to work on the cooling function so it's not very friendly in winter! But then again, using it on heat must also work...

Thanks Groucho. Have you ever noticed a stand-alone unit being sold?

Thanks Stewart. I have seen a few threads about mildew/mold before and my impression was that most homes (newer ones anyway) had this issue due to the way they were constructed. I'm not sure the villa I will be renting will have this problem. I was just trying to prepare ahead of time. That DampRid looks like a good option and I was hoping it could be found on the island. I know humidity is high during the winter months.

Stewart,

Balconies too... they leach water side ways to rooms on upper floors

Groucho..of course even more so, if they slant towards the building rather than away, and perhaps even more if they do not have a drip edge as the lack of this will cause water to run down and enter the brickwork ...most important thing is to identify and stop the source else all else will only be tempory.

most damp in NC is caused by shoddy workmanship

perhaps someone should open up a Damp specialist shop..or is there one?

for those in apartments, the maintenance company should sort...or builders Gtee...or are both of these just wishful thinking?

We have a new build with serious damp and mould issues.

Carringtons are sorting out the problems ( its not their build) using a tried and tested process.

Doing a fantastic job and working to UK standards.

Thanks

Art.

Hi Molly, (and thank you for your kindness) and also Art glad your problems with damp are getting sorted.

Molly we have a very good quality, new custom build villa, but we still had serious problems during winter,

but then I realised most of it was caused by condensation, The type of structure here (if it is fairly new) ie big concrete shell, Like a fridge in winter, double glazed, no through draft.

You can help the situation by having windows open etc. and airing the property, you will see the locals, the first spot of sunshine and a dry day, their rugs, and bedding are outside airing,

Also many air con units have built in De Humidifiers. good luck.

Sorry should have said that Mr Pound do pouches like Damp-rid but at 4 lira for 4 can work out quite expensive as I generally find they fill up with moisture within 2 weeks!

Thanks all for you advice and info. Hopefully it won't be a major issue. Glad to know that I can get DampRid though.
