Hi,

I want to cross by foot in Nicosia and then drive to Kyrenia to visit the British Cemetery (arriving South Nicosia either late Friday night or Sat am and I need to be back in South Nicosia Sunday night - so probably one or two nights in the North).

I've crossed the boarder before so don't need info on that bit but last time (which was a few years ago and siesta time....) I didn't see any car hire companies / taxi's which could be picked up on the Northern side of the crossing.

Have things changed? What would be the easiest way to do this?

Thank you,

Book a taxi to collect you at the border and take you back. Or arrange for a car hire firm to meet you with a car. The car hire would be cheaper.

=> Which crossing do you mean: Lokmacı (pedestrians only, center of Lefkoşa, no taxis waiting), Ledra Palace (pedestrians only, taxis available) or Metehan (pedestrians and cars, no taxis waiting)?

The car hire is not cheaper as the min is 3 days also Parklane are doing a fantastic deal of £7 p/p b/b so get in touch with them they will be able to get a taxi at local rates to collect you etc enjoy your stay

The cheapest way of doing this is to walk up Ledra Street, passed Debenhams, and then through the Lokmacı crossing. Walk to Kyrenia Gate and on the right you will see a small park with cafe and market stalls. Walk down the diagonal path to the main road and wait at the exit for the Girne dolmus/bus. After coming through the mountains get off at the first roundabout in Girne and take the first exit. The British Cemetery is about 100 meters on the left.

To return, walk back to the roundabout, and on the opposite side of the road to Nicosia there is a bus stop, or you can walk into Girne and catch the bus near the Post office. The drop off point is back where you started in Nicosia (near to Kyrenia Gate)

Great thanks - didn't realise there was more than one place to cross in the city centre - I must have been at ' pedestrians only, centre of Lefkoşa' - sounds like taxi is going to be the best way.

There are 2 cemeteries - one near the big roundabout which is being deconstructed/reconstructed, and one down almost near Pia Bella hotel.

The military British cemetery is near the big roundabout, and where the role of honour monument was unvelied last year. The British cemetery near Pia Bella is a civilian one.
