If you support an English team, who are not in the Champions League Quarter Finals tonight/tomorrow, do you still want the English team to win.

Another way of asking, do you want Arsenal/Man U to win or lose?

As a Cheslea supporter, on this occasion, I do want them both to win, plenty of extra-time, lots of penalties, bookings, sending-offs, and of course many many injuries! He, he, he.

And before you all get on your high-horses, do you expect supporters from Scotland (whom I remember were also part of the UK), will want England to win the World Cup?

I always find it very disappointing that if their own club/country are knocked out of a competition, that some Brits will not support another Brit club/country - are people really that small minded/bigotted ??

I remember being based in Scotland during the 1998 World Cup and the Scots were walking around in Argentina football shirts - short memories when you consider that a large number of Scots Guards were killed and injured during the Falklands campaign.

As for me, I will cheer on any British club/country against foreign competition.

P.S. Have drawn France in the World Cup sweepstake at the Paradise so hoping for an England v France final with Capellos boys triumphing

As a Chelsea follower (I used to be a supporter ie; season ticket holder going week in week out) of forty plus years I love watching football and I would always want the British side to win. I did not think Arsenal were good enough to beat Barcalona, but it not stop me wanting them to win. Good luck to Man U, but if they play like they did on Saturday then I don't hold out much hope for them!

It is not necessaruly small mindedness in club football situations at least. Success in European competitions brings both Money and Kudos. If a rival team are successful they gain money through prizes, TV and merchandising, allowing them to pay better wages and spend more on transfer fees but probably more importantly they make themselves a more attractive proposition to any players looking to sign.

As a supporter of their rivals why would I want this, a large number of people critisise the self perpetuating nature of the so called top 4 (Unlucky scousers) but are you suggesting they should support these teams in European competition? Their success in these competitions is partially the reason for their regular filling of the champions league spots. So why would an Everton Fan or a Totttenham fan or an Arsenal fan be cheering on Man Utd? To do so makes no sense.

The sort of tribalism displayed by football fanatics is the very same type of tribalism that led to the division of Cyprus. They are not us... we don't like them.

The funny thing is, it's pretty much peculiar to football. I don't see anywhere near as much schadenfreude in any other sport.

No schadenfreude in any other sport?

you obviously didn't see Gavin Hastings wearing his Aussie scarf at the 1991 world cup final at Twickers.

Take your point re domestic football but even so, I would like to think that national pride takes precedence over local rivalries.

That said, I am a Stoke fan so have few, if any distant hopes of us living the Champions League dream ;-)

Despite you knocking us out of the FA Cup, was cheering on the Gooners last night but have to say that Messi was awesome and Barcelona were worthy winners.

We, as UK citizens, are in Europe, so are Germany.

My first question should be fairly easy to answer, who would you want to win, assuming Germany and Argentina were in the World Cup Final?

Now, next question, Germany v Brazil!

I think I have made my point. (It's nothing to do with the fact that we haven't had a war with Brazil).

I just thought of a third question; albeit extremely unlikely, Scotland v Wales? He he he.

It's all down to "who do we hate the least". Because we hate everyone.

fiendishpaul,

I hadn't realised there were other 'potters' on this site. Perhaps we should form an overseas branch of their fan club and organise a cheese and oatcake evening or two!

Love mine with melted cheese, beans and bacon - not the healthiest of options but I only get the chance to have them a couple of times a year :-(.

Come on the Potters !!

I don't support any particular team, I do however like to watch a good game or competition no matter who wins, for me at the end of the day it is about entertainment.

Newscoop,

Which bit of " I don't see anywhere near as much schadenfreude in any other sport. " don't you understand?

Wearing a scarf is not quite the same level of venom on regular display at football matches... at Rugby Clubs up and down the length of the country, teams recently at 'war' will be seen sharing a drink and comparing injuries...
