Up until today I did not think that GPS/Satnav devices were (due to the lack of mapping) usable in the TRNC. However in todays Cyprus Star on page 11 there is a quarter page advert posted by a company called ERA GPS & Navigation advertising GPS/Satnav equipment that covers the 'Whole Cyprus' (sic). Has anyone had any dealings with this company and if so what level of mapping do their devices provide for the TRNC? The address of the company is Bulent Ecevit Cad. Renan Denizer Plaza Kat:2 No:7 Kyrenia. Anyone know where that is? Now if I had one of their devices I would be able to find them no problem.

It was in the news on the telly about a week ago. Apparently it took them three years to compile it and its fully functional with full directions. They claimed that all the speed radars are marked on it as a further incentive

Do you know if you are able to down load it and is it compatable with Tom Tom? Or do you have to buy a complete new system?

AJ,

I once asked a car dealer if the GPS in an imported car would work here, and he said 'Look, the mountains are THERE, on that side... and the sea is HERE, on this side... It's impossible to get lost, so what do you want GPS for?'

keithcaley, In otherwords the car dealer didn't have a satnav system to sell you. Try asking the same question when the ERA GPS system becomes available - reckon you'll get a different answer.

What do you want satnav for anyway - next thing you will be asking for postal codes and street signs, not to mention traffic signs all over the place. Just get lost like everyone else and enjoy life.

Now that Google maps has Cyrus covered, anyone with a Blackberry has a simple version of GPS/SatNav that'll work on the island.

Download the mobile version of Google Maps and install it on your blackberry. One of the features in the app allows you to search for any address, another allows you to request directions to that address. I'm in the UK where it works perfectly well, but if anyone over there has a Blackberry, give it a try and let us know what happens!

Keith

Re message 4:

Whenever we have visitors over we tell them the same thing although I have been called out late at night to guide them home because they could not tell where the sea finished and the mountains started.

The other interesting aspect is that all councils have street maps (albeit hand drawn) of the areas/roads etc that they are responsible for servicing and on quite a few occasions I have popped into their offices to ask where a particular street is but of course you can only do this on weekdays and in the few hours that the offices are open.

Hi Hans,

Navigation applications are sold in 2 ways in the world:

a)SD CARD licensing model( I think your product uses this model)

b)Device ID model(our product uses this model)

A)For SD card model, software is licensed according to the SD Card ID. Therefore you can use your sd card with different devices.

Because of the security issues we don’t use this licensing model.

B)For Device ID model, software is licensed according to device ID(Pnd or mobile phone). Therefore maps can only work on licensed devices.

This method is the most secure way of licensing in the world, because of this we choose this method.

As a result,

Unfortunately our map doesn’t work on your device. Because our map is registered for only our devices.

You have to purchase our device to use our Cyprus map. Or if your mobile phone has Windows Mobile 6x based operating system and GPS functionality,

we can install our software with Cyprus map

Hi Anıl,

Will the software work on my Mio P350 DigiWalker?

At the moment I use 'GPSS' with homemade maps, but it is obviously limited in that it does not give directions etc...

Will the software download straight onto the pda, or does it need to be loaded onto a card first? Can I choose which of these options I wish to use?

How much memory does the program need?

How much will it cost me?

Sorry for so many questions

Thanks for your response Anıl,

I did read message 17.

I apologise in advance if the answers to my questions are in the 'technical compliance' that you wrote on message 15, but could you please provide plain English answers to the following questions: -

Will the software work on my Mio P350 DigiWalker?

Will the software download straight onto the pda, or does it need to be loaded onto a card first?

Can I choose which of these options I wish to use?

How much memory does the program need?

I am sure that many other people will be interested in these answers!

Thanks in advance!

Keith.

Keith,

Message 17 says that there are currently TWO ways of using the Eranav system.

1. Buy the dedicated Eranav PND for 250 euro

2. Install on a Windows Mobile x GPS phone for 90 euro

Greenman & Hans,

Thank you for your comments and helpful advice.

However, I had read message 17, and also looked at the website.

While these give general guidance, I am interested in whether the software will work on my specific PDA - the website only gives a list of 'phones (unless I'm reading it wrong )

From past experience, I know that some software / hardware combinations can be problematic, and I need to know if there are any known 'issues' using the software with my pda - BEFORE I part with my cash!

So, Anıl, could you please answer the questions?

1)ERANAV PND (Portable Navigation Device) http://www.eranav.com/pnd_eng.html

Question: Will the software work on my Mio P350 DigiWalker?

Reply: No, ERANAV does not work on different devices (mio, tomtom etc.) You must purchase the device ERANAV PND.

Question: Will the software download straight onto the pda, or does it need to be loaded onto a card first? There is no option to download online.

Reply: ERANAV Mobile, Windows Mobile 6.0 and is compatible with the phone-PDA structures.

Question: Can I choose which of these options I wish to use?

Reply: Kyrenia need to come to our office with your mobile phone or pda device.

Question: How much memory does the program need?

Reply: Full packet 241 mb.

Also, pda and mobile phones the same product segment.ERA will test compatibility with your device. If testing is successful, sales are made.

I like the idea of GPs for Cyprus as I like to explore the hidden tracks etc.. But what I dont like is the issue that I either need to buy a phone with windows or a new GPS Navigation. I dont have problems to pay for maps but I would like to run it on my own navigaton - Garmin, Tom Tom or whatever.. I think if this option would come up, there would be many people buying the cyprus map. You could even sell it to big companies like Garmin etc.. But under this circumstances I am not ready to spend another 200 + Stg for a new Navigation system.. I will continiue with google maps preloaded on my laptop and in europe I will use my garmin which workes perfect...

good luck

kezzyhomeros,

It may have escaped your notice, but apart from the largest main roads, there are no TRNC street names on Google maps, - not to mention there being no 'places of interest', petrol stations, or speed cameras.

A bit difficult to enter your start point and destination by name, and get turn-by-turn directions then!

Keith, I agree with you,

Online google maps has a different purpose and only the city center, includes the streets and highways. In addition, the existing road direction is undefined.

* If you want to use printers and paper or,

* If you want to travel with a computer or mobile devices (with gps) permanently connected to the internet

This is an alternative, but free solution? I do not think

In brief, the use of portable navigation with online maps have different objectives

The problem is that you have to fork out over £200 to buy the device. I have a really nice SAT NAV that cost me £200 in the Uk and will work in all of Europe including Turkey. However here I have to buy the whole device - why not just sell the software?

i think what they have done is great work, but making people buy the whole device will cost them customers imho

Hence to say I won't bother...

Frequently asked questions: Section-1

Question: UK, Turkey and Europe navigation devices are cheep, but why in Cyprus this devices are same cost?

Answer: Navigation prices are changing by device quality, map detail and market capacity.

Example: X name company order 2 million unit for software and hardware and that company gets relevant cost for high quota’s help. Also that devices have access to millions of customers in the global market and gets so many currency. It means that company has more selling with less price.

Shortly, when you are making comparison between world market and Cyprus market, scale must be market value, cost criteria

I bought the portable device from Eranav on Thursday and I have been playing with it ever since. It will take me a few more days to get the hang of it fully but it looks impressive enough already.

As it stands I have a few questions for those who know:

1. Is it possible to read the coordinates of the position you are in or any point on the map? This should be a very useful feature because when I go on holiday I like to note the coordinates of specific places and then look them up on Google map and have a look at numerous pictures available for that spot.

2. Once I enter an address I can start directions to get me to that spot but how can I have a look at the destination on the map? I know that it can be done but how? I have been going in circles.

3. The charger supplied with the device is a cigarette lighter one but I really need one for the mains when I am on holiday without my car. The car charger is 5 volts 1500 ma but I could only find 5 volts 1200 ma for the mains in most shops. Is it sufficient if I use it only for charging without having the device on? I found another one for 5 volts 3000 ma and I will check it on Monday but I suspect it will be more bulky.

Any replies from Anıl or others who got one will be greatly appreciated.

ismet

PS: I promise not to incure any more speeding tickets because this little gadget warns you with a nasty warning when you approach one. Of course the data will need updating from time to time.

Goodmorning Ismet

I have been using my unit for nearly 3 months and i might be able to answer your questions.

Will try to answer in the order you asked.

1-To read the coordinates of a specific location, go to Menu>setup>System>System Information

2-Once you setup your route by entering either address/coordinates/POI etc etc..go to menu>setup>setup routing criteria>enable simulation...this will disable the GPS radio and start a simulation of the route you choose

3-The 5 volts 1500mA charger supplied with the unit is NOT just a charger..It is also the power supply for use in the vehicle.

The battery used in the unit is a 3.7v 1500mAh Lithium Ion normally used on Nikon coolpix cameras and ideally it should be charged with 4.2V 0.45A-0.95A (higher the amp shorter the charge period)

Anything with a higher amp charge output from those figures above will do the job but shorten the battery life.

It is a very good device had mine about 4 months now, excellent at letting you know you are approachong speed cams, you can set it to alert you from 500 down to 100m. I bought a charger from Protech across the road from Marshalls in Karakum. Also, when I went to uk they supplied me with uk map on 4gb disk for 20euro. Wrked wekk over there! Only problem I find is that the in car power supply does not seem to charge the mains battery up, do not see why this is so. If you mains battery is low you keep getting a message coming up. Once recharged by mains supply message stops.

It is very useful going from Tatlisu to Lefkosa hospital on anywhere in that area, you pass through up to 14 speed cams!

msg. 44,

Iceman,

Thanks for the input. On the matter of the charger, it is true that the slower the charging rate the longer the battery life. However the charging rate depends on the voltage and/or the charging circuit of the device. Hence I have no control over the charging rate. Thus will the 5 Volt 1200 ma charger be sufficient to charge the device at least with the device in the off position?

msg. 47,

Pipie,

It costs 250 Euros less 10 Euro discount for C44 members. They will give you maps of other countries free but you pay for the SD card, providing you do not ask for a multitude of maps. In that case they will have to charge you something. I asked for the map of Japan. they did not have it but they promised to try to find me one.

PS: On the advert above it says 10 pounds discount for C44 members but they meant it to be 10 Euros

Pipie

Eranav office is in central Kyrenia,on the left, 150 meters before The Colony Hotel.

The unit+software+power supply/charger is €250.

It does have English language option on both menu and vocal guides.

It has maps for the whole of Cyprus..

You cannot get any map for iphone or any other GPS navigation device that will give you north Cyprus.

5 Volt 1200mA will charge the battery in off position...might even be enough to allow you use the device while charging.

As far as i know, Eranav do sell mains chargers also...why not buy one from them?

Iceman,

They had only a few in stock and they sold out on mains chargers. Anyway I got myself a 5.2 volts 1200 ma charger (90-240 volts input), had to sort out the socket and it works fine now and drawing only 520 ma on charge. The interesting thing is that when I turned on the device, it cut off the current altogether. I could not understand this but did not investigate further because the weather was getting too hot for me. So when the device is on cigarette lighter charger, how does it work when turned on? No, I must investigate it further.

I tried the simulation mode but it takes too long to go from Famagusta to Nicosia. There must be a quicker way to get there on the map. any ideas?

PS: the only explanation I can think of is that my current measuring device was connected very badly and probably it got disconbnected when I touched the GPS to turn it on. It can't be anything else and I am not going to undo the sorlder to get back to the connections

Japeal,

I am sure the cigarette lighter charger unit charges your mains batterry as you use the unit. If you have a flat batterry, it may give you the low warning sign until the charge gets to a certain level. How long did you have it on whilst the low batterry warning kept coming up?

when you are on the map...pressing the pen (slightly) anywhere on the map will bring out a yellow crosshair on the screen.

Anywhere you touch with the pen will center the map on that point so you can move about on the map.

tip:zoom out of the map to go faster to place you wish to go then zoom in..

another nice tip is....you can bring up the yellow cross-hair and navigate on the map to a position you wish to use as destination.

Once one the point you wish to use as destination.click the icon in the bottom right corner

you will see the road/street name of the point on the cross-hair

ıf you select the road/street name, device will give you 4 options.

1-Add to address book

2-Use as vehicle destination

3-set as vehicle position

4-save as home..

I find this function very useful...

Thanks Mustafa, just what I needed. I am going to Corinium Golf club this evening for a wedding party. I will give it a good test run. I looked it up and it is aleady on the map as a Point of Interest. Is there a category where I can spot nice blue eyed blondies? We have lots of local ones but none of them are blue eyes

Ismet,

Do you remember the song that went -

"Keep you eyes on the ROAD, keep you hands upon the WHEEL...'?

If not, I'll find you a copy, to keep your mind on DRIVING

I have an idea. New speed cameras are popping up everywhere and thus we can share the information and add them to our maps. How about having a share scheme? I can do the road from Famagusta to Nicosia and also from Famagusta to Bogaz in Famagusta. Any volenteers to share the information?

Ismet,

Eranav did indicate to me that they would be very interested in downloading any data added to individuals' own ERA Satnavs, and including this in future updates.

If anyone has added new POIs etc, then I'm sure that they will be pleased to see you - you might even be able to negotiate a discount on the price of the updates - but don't quote me

I was ni Nicosia this morning with my wife. After she finished her work in Court she wanted to go to Nicosia District Office. Well, I had my GPS with me (of course), I looked up the Government Offices category and there it was, Nicosia District Office. I simple followed the instructions and when it said I arrived at the destination I parked on the side of the road. Before I had a chance to look around, it said "the District Office of Nicosia is on your left". I looked up and there it was, spot on infront of the office. Then we had to go to Credit West Bank in that region and again spot on.

Ismet,

If this continues, then you'll be able to drive with your eyes shut.

At least then all the "nice blue eyed blondies" will be safe

If possible please include a way of reading the coordinates of a specific point on the map. It will be a terrific facility when sharing information with friends.
