Just wanted to say what outstanding service I received recently from Turkish Bank.

I have an internet account - very easily set up- and manged to lock myself out by putting in the wrong password 3 times (Dohh!) just before returning to the UK. was coming back in june so thought I would sort it out then.

Didn't count on the excellent services of Linda Roy, who contacted me via email to see if I had a problem. Shortly after I had a telephone call from their IT section (while I was still in UK) and was talked through the resetting process.

Absolutely first class service - and no - I am not a relation nor do I work for turkish bank.

Linda,

What about transfering cash on internet? I bank with the opposition, having Premier accounts at both ends.

I transfer on line, FOR FREE, and the cash is my account in Girne usually the same day.

to transferr cash ıt costs money from your bank ın uk to London then London to here ın the TRNC then we take commıssıon

thats why nearly everyone moves money vıa a cheque deposıt and waıts 31 days

ı heard one of the opposıtıon charges £55 to clear a cheque tıme and thıs takes 66 days

That is why I will not change then, why pay money and wait 31 days.

Sorry.

Hi cyprusishome, I wish i had your luck, i've been trying to get money sent from HSBC in UK to an account set up here in Girne both premier accounts and i'm still waiting. Last friday they faxed from Girne to autherise sending the money and the girl there said it would be in my account here on monday this week, still waiting,I am now seriuosly considering opening an account with Turkbank as it could'nt be any worse.

Hi Pets61,

Great info for us and thanks, very helpful post.

When you say cheques can be deposited into a sterling deposit account in a NC bank.

Do all the banks work this way, there, when depositing a cheque ?

Are we saying if I were to write out a cheque from my uk bank, deposit into my sterling account there, then it would clear in the allocated time for that bank?

Hi Littlenige

I bank with Turk Bankasi. I get 14.5% on my 30 day deposit account.

I heard about Continental paying 20%, but becasuse I haven't heard of them before, I decided to play it safe. I read on one of the posts (think it was ukturk) about banks crashing in the early 2000's, and people getting there fingers burnt. Better the devil.

Cheers

Bob.

barrovian,

Because all banks are now bonded to a minimum pay back per account they are almost as safe as UK banks. There is risk involved in trying to maximise your interest rates but I think for our circumstances, ie providing our income, it is worth the minute risk.

There is another thread running on interest etc where all of this has been covered.

I use Iktisatbank where they pay 18% or 18.5% for over 50,000 ytl with withdrawl or pay in allowed on the monthly maturity date.

It really is worth investigating all of the local banks and because the government bond is per account you can maximise over several accounts if you wish.

Hi Petsitter61

Need advise please as all the info does confuse my tiny brain. Just to clarify, am i right to believe that i can transfer funds from my Abbey account in uk to your Turkbank but transfer charges would apply.

Funds can also be transfered by sending you a cheque but that is a longer process.

What evidence do i need to produce to open a joint account?

Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Cyprusishome

We opened accounts in Girne with Continental Bank and it is a nightmare trying to transfer funds via A & L even though we have all the necessary details. We are considering opening an account with Turkish Bank (UK) Ltd in London and NC and are hoping this will be a bit easier - which bank are you with?

I trnasfer all through HSBC Offshore to HSBC Girne and then take notes to other bank. Have not had need to test the internet of the smaller banks yet, remember the likes of Continental & Iktisatbank only have a handful of branches and their networks are still new and untested for the business they could potentially get.

This is why I always recommend people use the big banks first, make sure the system works and then move onto the ones that are new and with more risk.
