ERA GPS & Navigation company has released maps for Cyprus, covering both North and South!

"From Dipkarpas to Paphos" they say.

They cover all roads including village roads, off road tracks and even walkways.

Their POI data looks quite extensive too - parking lots, restaurants, etc..

It even includes the speed cameras!

You can install the map on your phone or buy the device to put in your car.

The device costs £220 but Sibel Hanim is offering £10 discount if you mention Cyprus44.

(Please do so - you will get the discount and they'll keep advertising on Cyprus44 - see the banner above!)

http://www.eranav.com/eranavproducts.html

I own a Garmin device which I bought from South but will be trying this one out in the next few weeks.

Quite excited to discover the offroad tracks in Karpas (I know most but still)

What about the valuable time you will save travelling the shortest route to known places, or actually finding the place you are looking for as if you've been there before!

I'm all for technology!

I know that some people have been waiting for these maps for long.

....I agree Sat Nav does get you there.... eventually. Through fords down narrow country lanes barely wide enough for the thing you are driving.

Yea..a bit like getting lost...

I personally think its a waste of money, The TRNC is way too small for this device.

Will it tell you when cars, scooters, bikes are coming the wrong way up a one-way street? Or when a one-way street suddenly reverses polarity (like the one opposite the Colony).

The problem is that you have to fork out over £200 to buy the device. I have a really nice SAT NAV that cost me £200 in the Uk and will work in all of Europe including Turkey. However here I have to buy the whole device - why not just sell the software?

i think what they have done is great work, but making people buy the whole device will cost them customers imho

Hence to say I won't bother...

Frequently asked questions: Section-1

Question: UK, Turkey and Europe navigation devices are cheep, but why in Cyprus this devices are same cost?

Answer: Navigation prices are changing by device quality, map detail and market capacity.

Example: X name company order 2 million unit for software and hardware and that company gets relevant cost for high quota’s help. Also that devices have access to millions of customers in the global market and gets so many currency. It means that company has more selling with less price.

Shortly, when you are making comparison between world market and Cyprus market, scale must be market value, cost criteria

Frequently asked questions: Section-2

Question: I have a device, just I want to buy map software. in UK, in Turkey, in EU it’s possible. Butin here why is this impossible?

Answer: Navigation applications are sold in 2 ways in the world:

a)SD CARD licensing model b)Device ID model (our product uses this model)

A)For SD card model, software is licensed according to the SD Card ID. Therefore you can use your sd card with different devices. Because of the security issues we don’t use this licensing model.

B)For Device ID model, software is licensed according to device ID.Therefore maps can only work on licensed devices. This method is the most secure way of licensing in the world, because of this we choose this method. As a result, Unfortunately our map doesn’t work on your device. Because our map is registered for only our devices. You have to purchase our device to use our Cyprus map.

Is this product like others available, would we be able to take it to uk and download uk maps or any other country if needed? Or is the programing limited as you already state you cannot download current cyprus maps to Garmin for example as it has different op system.

Do you not have to know where you are going in the first place to be able to tell the device where you want to find? If that is true then it will need an address rather than just at statement - i.e. - 24 Ali Sok, Girne - that should work. But how about down by the lions head rock past Aligadi? How will I be able to find this on the GPS unless the person who tells me where it is already knows the co-ordinates?

No knocking the product but have used many types in many countries and am interested.

Hi Mick,

You have 3 options to go to your destination;

a)Selecting destination on the map

b)Searching from database(If you now the address you can use this option)

c)Choosing from POI category

If you dont know the address and you only have a brief definition in your hand, it is easier to use c) option (POI).Because we have 4000+ POIs(beach, bank, fuel, hotel etc.) in our database.

Thanks,

one small problem it tells me i live in a different road road that i think i live in, my road is longish and changes name to another part way down and the GPS says, i livin in the other road so wonder whos wrong, the GPS software or the address for my bills

I've had sat nav for sometime here in the UK. Whilst I will say that the system will get you there... eventually there are some things that need to be understood. This is mainly due to the way the device is set up. There are several menus that allow you to customise your journey. The biggest mistake that most people make is to set up with the SHORTEST journey.

This usually sends the driver down narrow lanes through fords, and sometimes up the wrong way on a one way street...and other bad routes.

I have found that if I set my sat nav up to 'quickest route' and use just a trifle of common sense I end up where I was meant to.

Have tried 3 times now to find your offices after looking at your map location on your website. Never found you. Are you on the road near the Colony, if so where, driven up & down 4 times walked up and down twice, asked a few locals and everytime they told me to go to Tektan. Can you give location details please!!!

Hi Ekrem,

In-dash navigation systems are different.

Unfortunately, we currently do not have software solutions for the in-dash (in car device)

We recommend ERANAV PND.

I have been using the device for some time and I am very pleased with it. Of course the menu and the maps could be better. For example the road leading to China Garden opposite Lemar (Çatalkoy) is one way but not so on the map. So you have to use the device with caution.

One feature I would like is to see the coordinates instantly when I point a location on the map. My friend Keith has managed to find a way to get the coordinates of any point on the map but its elaborate. Once you get the cross-hair on the desired point you select it as the position of your car and then you can read the coordinates from the Systems menu. So you can tell your lover your secret place for next meeting without going round and round the bush
