| Pubs in Ascot are refusing to show England's World Cup match against Algeria because they fear it will lead to drunken violence. The crunch Group C match on Friday June 18 beings at 19:30 and police fear that boozing racegoers would cause chaos if they continued drinking for the match. Up to 80,000 race fans are expected to spill into the Berkshire town for the Ascot races that day - an event that traditional sees people knocking back the champagne and Pimm's from as early as 11am. Acting on advice from Thames Valley Police, licensing officers have now agreed to keep the town dry while the match is going on, and according to a report in the Sunday Express, they have warned pubs that they face being closed down for at least 24 hours if they screen the game and trouble breaks out. |
