Can anyone who has renewed their passport in Northern Cyprus recently tell me if you keep hold of the old one while the new one is being processed, would,nt have been a problem, but we now have family staying indefinitely following the Volcano in Iceland, and mine runs out on the 16th of May, they will need to get to Larnaca whenever the call comes, not sure whether to wait, or if you keep your old one, get on with it.

Thanks, Steve.

P.S. do you get your application form from the BRS, and where are they ?

Steve

no you dont keep it, you have to hand it in but they do give the old one back with the top corner chopped of when you get your new one, well thats what i have been told and i really hope so coz my old passport has got 18 months worth of business permit in it, mine is in the embassy now and am waiting for the call to pick it up.

You can get your application form from the British Consulate in Nicosia (north side) if you need directions give me a call

As above, they will take your passport and return it with the new one with both the corner snipped to show it has been renewed as well as a written statement containing the new passport number in it.

Steve, one reason they give it back is because you might have an existing visa. I had to carry 3 around at the same time just for the reason you mention above. The new one plus 2 old ones that still had the visas that were valid.

I have also found that keeping the old passport is a good idea, I had a credit card maxed out in Brasil were I have never been so it was fraudulent but my only proof was sending copies of every page of my old and new passports to prove I had not been there on the dates of the card transactions, so the moral is, don't throw away the old one.

Another reason for holding on to your old passport once it has expired is if it has been mentioned on any paperwork here such as your contract of sale. You may need to produce it in the future.

I have just applied for a new uk passport at the BHC and I can confirm that you can keep your current passport until your new one is ready. They will take a photocopy of your old one to submit with your application. When called to collect your new passport you will be required to surender your old one and hav the corners cut off all pages except your current residency page. That then will be returned to you for you to produce both passports when entering and leaving the TRNC until your new residency stamp is entered into your new passport on renewal

Hope this helps.

You can renew your passport one year before it expires. You can also renew your passport on an one day express service.

Why do people ask this type of question on here?

Why not phone the British High Commission and get the facts?

You all need to realise that people on here answer this type of question with their best guess, or how it was in the past. You'd be a fool to rely on their answers.

This thread is a great example of what I am saying :

newscoop, girne, marcosthechef, proger1, all gave you incorrect answers but not one of them said "I think" or "it was like this last time I did it".

Lucky for you others (firebreathing and nicka) then came on with the current correct answers (I think!).

Please, when you try to answer these type of questions, state that you are guessing or giving old info.

Thank you.

Regards,

Ozbey.

Guess they must have changed the system, cos when my husband renewed his and mine a year later, in both instances they kept the old passports, which means we couldn't go over the border. We missed a Christmas lunch because we had not even been given a receipt. So maybe a few hard luck stories later like ours, and they might have tried to find a way round it.

Sounds good! It was the most miserable Christmas day of our lives - even worse than when Santa doesn't make it down the chimney!

Again...my experience..but I tried prior to my passport application to phone the BHC to check if they are still accepting credit cards for payment. I tried 3 times on 2 separate days and guess what..no answer

They now have a dedicated phone line to deal with Passport enquiries set up by a sub-contracted firm and guess what.....at a premium rate so I think thats why they don't answer the phone at the BHC anymore.

Just for info they do accept the payment by credit card and the operative told me that on top of the 148 Euros for the adult passport that when they are delt with by Madrid there may be a further 50 Euro courier fee. So get your applications in asap before the end of May. I am still waiting for mine to be completed they told me about 2 weeks at the moment.

Best wishes and good luck...All the info is on the web site

Hi Ozbey,

You are right of course, I was left confused following different answers to my question, I should have known better, not peoples fault, more of what we should expect here, it changes daily, and even who you deal with on the day. Its part of why we all love it here, quirky I call it. I went in myself yesterday and yes if you ask then they can take a photocopy and you can retain your old passport until your new one comes, brilliant. Thanks everyone for your help.

right folk i have been there this morning to renew my childrens passports and will let you know the what we had to do.

We downloaded and printed the application forms from the website and completed them and had them

countersigned by our doctor, and also the passport photos certifying that it was a likeness etc.

instruction notes can be downloaded.

with children another school certificate requiring a signature from headmaster/mistress and a photo

has to be downloaded and printed as well as passport application.

then just take job lot to bhc which is very easy to find.

head towards metahan crossing take the left at the last roundabout before the exchange money shops

traffic light controlled.then go

towards another set of lights turn right keep going until you see the consulate on the right you cant miss it!!!

good tip leave mobile phones in car as you wont get in the building also electrical good and cameras not allowed.

get a number from security man and then wait your turn

............ then present to clerk and they will do the rest very easy very friendy and helpful.

ps if paying by credit card fill in or download the credit payment application form

we were done and dusted 20 minutes max.

they keep the old passports and ring you when the new are ready you will get old ones back.

they dont need them but take birth certs as we had a problem with one of our sons middle names not being on old passport and they needed a copy.take them just in case might save you a journey.

final date for renewals is 20th may after that you still complete as above but the applications will take longer as they will go by special courier to madrid and back.!!

there is a fee for the courier and also for the passports apart from that you still go to bhc nicosia and collect easy peasy dont worry anyone.

if you want you can post if you have any unanswered questions hope this helps you

cheers john
