Hi Dave. Interesting article - a bit heavy I thought!

My concern is if the Greek side can manage to convince the international public opinion about Eroglu's uncompromising stance on a possible solution and there is bad press, he may decide to walk away from the table.

>In contrast to Talat's vision based on bi-communal and bi-zonal federation, the basic parameter of a possible solution for Eroglu is a new partnership based on the equal political status of founding states. From this viewpoint, the foreseen federation could only be attained by evolutionary term stating with a confederational structure founded by two independent and sovereign states on the island. Therefore, it is expectable that the divergent view of Eroglu from that of Talat could force Greek leader Christofias further. <<

Well that's NEVER going to float, as well he knows... UN Sec Council Resolutions, Mr Eroglu ??!! Those aren't going to be removed UNTIL the deal is done - not before..

you may well be right about the un resolutions

but obviously they would only be removed when and if a deal is agreed

more to the point there is the prospect of the isolations eroding

oh, not of the un resolutions being anulled

unless like uk laws against witchcraft, they are ignored for centuries

no, I'm talking about several hopeful developments of late:

such as three new ferry services out of gazimagusa,

a local remedy for property "claims" encouraging inward investment,

explicit recognition by the echr of replacement owners' human rights too

and the prospects for direct trading, even if supervised by the eu

but a deal of any sort must await a realistic approach by the other side

is this why you referred to the abortive annan plan 2004 as "dreaded"?

if history ever repeats itself you'd again face the dreadful task

of promoting the benefits of compromise to greek cypriot society

...something of an uphill struggle it seems to me

Just read this on the 'Latest news from cyprus' newsboard...............

"Under the title Has the new negotiating team been determined? Turkish Cypriot daily Haberdar newspaper (20.04.10) reports that according to information acquired from reliable sources after the victory of Dervis Eroglu, chairman of the National Unity Party (UBP), in the illegal presidential elections of 18 April in the occupied areas of Cyprus, the names of the team of Mr Eroglu during the Cyprus negotiations with President Christofias are the following: Dr. Dervis Eroglu, Rauf Denktas (Advisor of the Negotiating Team), Ata Atun, Serdar Denktas (Chief Negotiator), Ismet Kotak, Taner Etkin, Huseyin Ozgurgun, Vedat Celik and Ergun Olgun."

Well I suspect Mr Christofias is missing his old friend Mr Talat already! I hope he's got lots of pairs of brown trousers

Rauf and Serdar Denktas were two of Eroglus fiercest critics until just before the election when they decided to throw their support behind him. It was obvious that a deal had been done - senior places on the negotiating team, what a suprise.

Nice to see that morality and principles are alive and well in the TRNC !!!

I don't know about that Paul. But I certainly think that Christofias is going to have his work cut out to try to resume the talks from where he and Talat left off! This negotiating team (if it is true) will only have a two-state solution to offer from their briefcase. What a shame they didn't try harder while they had the chance (tongue very firmly in cheek).

Incidentally, I believe the two-state solution is the only one that can work, the devil will be in the detail, which is what the negotiations will be about.

Turkey wants accession to the EU and it is extremely unlikely that a two state solution will 'tick' the necessary box that is one of the requirements for accession to go ahead. Eroglu and the Denktas's will no doubt be kept on a tight rein by the motherland.

paul message 9 and mark message 8:

this all seems rather hypothetical...

at the moment we have one recognised, internationaly-approved state,

and one unrecognised turkish-protected province slowly gaining acceptance

is this all about to change? I think we should be told!

Well, if it can't be agreed at the negotiating table, I'm sure creeping recognition may turn into a sprint. Maybe by rapid 'osmosis' - a favoured word by our southern friends

I'd love the cypriots to agree something, or indeed almost anything...

the prospects however look remote

it would be great if north cyprus was recognised

but foolhardy to assume recent progress was the beginning of the end

it may however to quote churchill be the "end of the beginning"

Turkey has NOT agreed yet to the team of negotiators.

So,before you know, you could all be talking for nothing.
