Just heard it on Sky News. All UK Airports are allowed to open to flights from 10:00 pm UK time tonight. It is starting to dawn that a huge over reaction to this dust problem has been made by the UK Government. The recriminations will start tomorrow morning. It is reckoned that the UK has lost 1.50 billion sterling over this nanny state knee jerk health and safety response by this government. The airlines are going to be the first in the queue to start filing for compensation. We have the ridiculous situation of inbound BA flights being diverted to Holland and Brussels to land just 200 miles short of their UK destination.

I think the whole thing was based on some very dodgy data. The 2 airlines that experienced engine problems (BA and KLM) flew through direct volcano cloud, that is, through a big smoky cloud next to a volcano that had just erupted, not in clear sunny air 500 miles away with a fine atmospheric residue of ash particles. Over the next few days watch this criticism run and run, this has been a ridiculous over reaction fed by the current health and safety fear of compensation culture now prevalent in the UK. Little good has it done the UK Gov, the compensation claims are going to start rolling in anyway for loss of custom. This whole episode is a sad illustration of how a country's government can loose sight of the real world and a grip on reality. This story is not over yet. As time goes on watch how the press reports shift from safety consideration to an incompetance one, the knives are out from the aviation industry, especially after hundreds of planes now start landing at UK airports.

A lot of the 'dust' is actually glass particles. When they get sucked into a jet engine the glass melts and clogs up the engine causing it to stop turning...and then the plane comes down...

If the current Icelandic volcano's big brother gets tickled by all those bad vibes going on next door, we'd all better watch out. Historically (so I've read) the bigger volcano has erupted 9 times out of 10 following eruptions from its close neighbour. If that were to happen again in the here and now, the experts have warned 'you ain't seen nothin' yet' and that disruption/discomfort to all of us in Europe would be magnified at least by 80%. Oh joy ! These 2 Icelandic volcanos haven't seriously belched for over 100 years. Now one has started up and is still very active. The forces of Nature may not have finished trying to teach us a lesson or two......
