After visiting Medikent hospital last week and talking to their gynaecologist she has agreed to have a day put aside for ex-pats who are due to have there cervical smears done. I was thinking of organising this for the beginning of May if enough ladies are interested.

Mammograms can also be organised for the same day.

If interested can you e-mail me on trnchealthcare@gmail.com when I can give you further details and costs.

Remember this could save you life ladies.

Well done Chris, a very important issue. My mum died five years ago of cervical cancer because she hadn't had a smear test so please ladies go get yourselves tested!

Don't get ahead of yourself Nurse.Urology latest "best practice"suggests that PSA's and the like are not indicated unless the individual is symptomatic. All men "of a certain age"will have some urinary symptoms,it's par for the course.

Back to msg 15.Why investigate without some clinical evidence?Regular cervical smears are supported by such evidence.Prostatic CA,prostatism and urethral occlusion are not. It's a question of moving quickly when early symptoms present.

i think a mens health day would be a great idea. we had these in the uk in the evening and they were well attended by men who otherwise could not come during the day due to work commitments but obviously with most ex pats being retired they would be able to attend most of the time.

Chris, I have already had my mammo and smear for this year, is anything else on offer. I have also had "full" bloods done but a total "once over" (well woman thing) would be good if at all possible. Thanks

Well done you being up to date with all your smears etc you are a shining example to the rest of us. The only other thing I can think of at this moment is a bone density scan but if I think of anything else will e-mail you.

Men, regarding PSA tests don't wait until symptoms occur if you're over the age of 50. My husband took part in a clinical trial aimed at men between 50 and 65 (he was 58 at the time), he was showing no symptoms at that stage yet we found out he had prostate cancer- one hell of a shock. As with all cancers, time is the important thing so if you think there may be a problem it may be worth a quick blood test just to make sure. He had radiotherapy and was given the all clear for 3 years but the dreaded prostate cancer has returned once more and we're just waiting to see what happens next. It doesn't always come down to lifestlye as he's fit, healthy, not over weight, takes lots of exercise and has a very healthy diet. You only get one shot at this life so make the most of it - in the mean time we're working on the theory that we got him through it once we can do it again

Dear Nurse. Chris This afternoon I spoke to a retired Scottish GP and explained to her what you and other nurses are trying to set up. She agreed to talk to you to find out how ideas (and help) can be matched. I'll email you her email address tomorrow and I'm willing to be the intermediary until you two have met and - hopefully - found a way to work together for the benefit of the expat community.

Sorry to hear your husbands cancer has returned, and good on him for taking part in the trial initially there should be more people like that. Unfortuntely in the UK unless there is money involved a lot of the time people won't take part in clinical trials. We wish him well for the future.

Misan it will probably be the first week in May if we can arrange it I am still waiting to hear back from Medikent.

Deniz1 The hospital is in Gonyeli on the outskirts of Lefkosa it has only been open for 5 months.

Hans. Thank you very much for that sorry I missed you yesterday at the 'function' but nobody told me about it only found out when I phoned scoop and it was all over then!!

Booitsme msg 38.

I too am sorry to hear about your husband and truly hope he makes a full recovery.

However I stand by my original msg.PSA's are specific to the prostate but there are other "marker"blood tests for other carcinomas.Bowel.lung,ovarian,bone etc etc.It would be folly to undergo all these "just incase".One would spend half ones life in hospital and always be "living on the edge".This and the obvious fiancial implications are why they are not routinely done.Even in Cardiology "risk assessememts" are undertaken prior to any formal investigations.

Ofcourse eveyone has the right to have these done especially if they are self financing.

Ladies,

Lots of interest so will hopefully give you a date at the beginning of next week, it may have to be over 2 days but as one of the other nurses suggested we could use this to our advantage and do the appointments by areas so you can all car share.

Tatum1..

It was done this way so that I could get the numbers of the ladies who want to book one of these procedures and to ensure confidentiality for them. I am sure they don't want to put on a public forum whether they are needing a cervical smear or mammogram.

If you require the information I am willing to give it to you either phone me on 0533 884 5621 or e-mail trnchealthcare@gmail.com

Hi Chris

I wasn't suggesting for 1 minute that people would want to give such details on the Forum.

I was however asking why you don't just put the individual costs of each procedure on the Forum.

Surely there would be no problem with that
