I'm sure the Irish Government will be telling RyanAir to live upto the letter of the law. If they don't, they may well find themselves having to look for another country to operate from.

Ryanair have now announced they WILL pay passengers expenses, but.... will be looking to the UK or EU to compensate them. So, us taxpayers will pick up the tab, not O'Leary! Please vote now for your favourite Airline. :-(

There was a lot on the news and other progs (radio &tv) while we were in UK - many airlines are not happy about the EU laws on this - of course Turkey isnt EU anyway, so the bods in UK waiting to get back may just get the minimum, eg rebook or money back. I think Ryanair may not be the only one, in the end!! It was said openly on tv by someone cant remember who, that the airlines just couldnt afford it. We were lucky got back on the 3rd plane out of Stansted yesterday, only 4 movements on the board from 12.30 to 2.30 - we'd been crossing fingers since last Friday!! Nice to be back!

Couldnt understand all the people beefing about it - Id rather be safe and on the ground than in the air with a volcanic dust cloud!! OK a lot had money probs but surely no one spends ALL their money on a holiday - they need some at home for when they get there - or am I being stupid in this spend-it-all age?

mamachina...it appears the people who have had money problems are those who went flight only and have had no response from their airline. If you went on a package holiday ,there is no problem ,your tour operator is responsible for you...and I certainly agree with you about being on terra firma at the moment. If all those who are shouting about bad organisation and that there was no problem, had been on that BA747 that flew through an ash cloud over Indonesia, they would certainly be praising the authorities for their action...

Coachie - I agree - I know I enjoyed gliding in my day but have no intention of trying it in a 737 or larger!! By money probs I meant the ones who literally spent all they had and then whinged because though they got rooms etc paid had no "spending money" etc (or should it be beer money?)

Re Msg 6 loulou = racist scum. If you had written "greedy bastards" everyone would agree. Why "typical Irish"??? How many UK nationals are on the Ryanair Board? O'Leary was up in front of an Irish Judge recently over misrepresenting the same judge's remarks in a letter from Ryanair to the Irish Transport Minister. First, the judge told O'Leary to stand up straight and take his hands out of his pockets. Then the judge told him he was going to sentence him to 90 days in jail for contempt of court. O'Leary nearly sh*t himself and grovelled to the judge for a chance to put things right. A cringing letter of apology followed to the minister and the judge. No doubt this incident was reminded to him after his outburst on radio and TV about not giving any assistant to passengers. Ryanair will now pay "reasonable expenses" to anyone upset by flight delays during the volcanic activity. No doubt Ryanair, Easyjet, and others will be after the EU for compo! DD

As an airport employee who is normally the target of Ryanair and O'Leary ire, I would normally be agin them. However on this occasion I find myself somehow seeing their point. The EU via Eurocontrol, the IAA and CAA 'directed' the airlines to cease operations. Early indications are that the US carriers are already setting up legal cases against the EU on this issue and european airlines (and others that operate to EU standards = Turkish, Emirates, Etihad) will follow suit. If the insurance companies are off the hook on this issue, why should the airlines bear all the costs? Doesn't seem fair. DD

The insurance companies are not off the hook, they just don't cover this kind of incident for obvious reason. So why should it then become an EU issue? Hey, why is it not your's or my fault? Others that operate to EU standards are any airline that fly's in EU airspace. Its absolute bullshite & we all know exactly what Leary is on with !

As far as the passenger is concerned they entered into a contract with airline (and in some cases a credit card company) to get them from A to B in exchange for cash. The airline must either fulfil the contract or return the money. As far as the airline is concerned they will have to see if the EU/air traffic control can justify their actions and if they can't then perhaps they can claim compensation from them. As far as the insurance companies are concerned it is doubtful that they will payout as the small print of their contracts usually has something which gets them out of paying in unusual situations.
