SImbas is right, get a local card, go to any of the phone shops, take passport as they will want a copy, best coverage from Turkcell

Is it right you can also buy Sim cards from the supermarkets - someone recommended Lemar to us? I am about to get an old phone unlocked so I can put in a Turkish simcard for our next trip. Can you get top ups from the supermarkets as well? Thank you

hammer is right - I put my mother-in-law's sim card in my phone and it wouldnt work. I phoned a mobile phone shop near to where we live and they said it would cost £11.99 to unlock and then you can go off and buy a new sim which some people have said comes with a bit of top up on it already.

BHW msg 4 Which Lemar?? the Lemar by Buger City has a small phone shop in it, so does the one by the new harbour roundabaout I beleive you will get sim in either, don't know about the new Lemar through Karakum. Top up either by card or at tills in most large s/market just tell them your number, the text will arrive to advise the top up before you finish paying. Though for anyone staying long time, change to contract asap, no line rental, cheaper calls, bill sent by txt each month, pay in any bank, pay your friends who isn't even there simply by telling the bank thier number and they will tell you the amount htye have to pay from any previous month. The thank you text then arrives soon after to confirm payment received. Easy system.

Thank you. I'll probably only use it to text anyway, usually cheaper that way.

Please bear in mind that if you plan to use your "home" network whilst roaming you will incur charges for any incoming calls as well which makes roaming really expensive. You will be better off all round buying a local SIM card and so long as your mobile is unlocked just doing a SIM swap. You can text your local number to all of your contacts who are likely to ring you that way they pay the international call cost and not you! As an example of costs. I was on one call in May which ok was just over an hour long but it cost my employers just under £300 (it was a work call so they couldn't complain). An hour sounds a long time but if you add up all of the individual minutes you talk for over a period of time then its not that long. Karen

Hi Brian, sorry for not replying sooner - the nearest Lemar to us is in Karakum - I am hoping they will sell sim cards . If not will try the other Lemar closer to town.

If you purchase a SIM card and obtain a local number you should advise friends & family to use their landline to call your mobile through a Discount Dial number ie call 08717727171 and follow the instructions to enter the number you wish to call 0090 ******* then push the hash key. Current cost of calling a "turkish mobile" is 7p per minute there are different codes for landlines , all this info is available together with dicounted rates world wide with Discount Dial. If you do a Google search for "Discount Dial" you will find all the info you need.
