I cannot see any direct trade happening until the TRNC is a separate state or else part of a unified Cyprus. There is more chance of Nick Clegg becoming UK Prime Minister. The Ferry never happened, by the way.

I do not think you should be so negative and pompous!! What do you know about Lebanon - nothing!! The TRNC has made good friends with the Lebanese and yes it will expand further. There are plans to resurrect the Jounieh to Famagusta Ferry Crossing as this will increase trade because at pres even Arab Countries have to go through Turkey. This is a new initiative and has not been discussed before- last sailed in 1974. I was at the British Lebanese Business Group meeting recently and the subject about Cyprus was raised. The Lebanese are annoyed at the South as just a few years ago they did not need a visa to enter the country now it os a fraught complicated where everything has to be pre booked before you get a visa- and if the North is mentioned then the Greek Consul rejects it as visiting 'Occupied Territories' The ferry was to Syria and did run for a few months not to Lebanon!

SO many Lebanese folk live in Cyprus.. they fled there during the Civil war in the seventies and again when Israel bombed in 2007. As long as the current status quo in Cyprus remains, I hardly think they will 'bite' the rump' RoC's hand by doing any deals

anger170/160, day by day, in every way, I am getting better and better. I published an article in NCFP about the Akgünler ferry running between Lebanon and Israel. It seems to have either never happened or to have stopped despite Cafer Gucafer's insistence that it would run. Check the Akgünler website. Perhaps it is being kept secret. I am also following the Direct Trade rumour which so far has not progressed to an official European Parliament meeting. I would love you to write an article for http://www.northcyprusfreepress.com if you can supply information about actual direct trade examples. It all seems to be rumours.

There is no international law to prevent direct trade between Lebanon and TRNC, its all as matter of having a direct link. As it stands goods go to many middle east countries from TRNC via Mersin. If we have a ferry direct to Lebanon, then a direct trade to Lebanon is possible. ismet

Elko, So if there is no international law preventing direct trade,i suspect another reason why it doesnt happen will be to do with the fact that Lebanon would be worried that they could lose their ties with the Greek Cypriots.Dont you think its time that the North bit the bullet and just created the direct links that are needed to carry out this trading.Time to move on, Paul.

one of the reasons I have always been sceptical of an agreement or indeed any species of merger between the two parts of cyprus, is the effective isolation of north cyprus from much of the world via an effective ban on shipping goods out, still in force even now in essence the south promotes it and leading nations go along with it, ostensibly to maintan the south's technical status in the north this sort of action needs to bite exceedingly harder than wot you got for the victim to ever throw in the towel... otherwise you simply alienate them and infuriate them, obviously this is of course why what is whimsically termed a peace deal on an island already at peace of however imaginative or creative form as conjured by well-wishers is a non-starter...and pretty bleedin' obvious too I'm "almost" sad to say (a sudden crescendo of thuds is heard in a mass falling-off of chairs)
