A friend of mine (English) has been living with TC for 20 years and they now have decided to marry. She is divorced (21 years) and has been told she needs to prove she is single. She has shown her decree of divorce to them but they say she has to go to UK and go to British High Commission to prove she is single. How can someone prove they are single? Any sensible thoughts or advice would be helpful so that I may pass this on. Thank you.

Speak to the British High Commission in Lefkosa - a very helpful man called Tuncel may well be able to provide the info you need - I think you should be able to get the relevant papers from them!!!

They told us the same a few years ago. We took a copy of my decree absolu to the noter and got it translated in to Turkish and had our advocate write a letter saying that I was free to marry. I didnt need to go back to the UK despite being told that I would.

Oh dear thats a shame - I got married in Turkey and they provided the relevant info and some paperwork too - then the British High Commission in Ankara did the rest of the paperwork.

Sorry Rachel, I read that last post I wrote back and it sounds really rude! We were told to go to the Muhtar, who told us to go to the high commision who would give us a letter. So off we went and saw Tuncel who is really helpful but said that he couldnt write any letters for us, that officially I would have to go back to UK and have my bands posted...then he unofficially said that we should go to see our solicitor who did the letter for us and the noter did the translation of orig divorce paper.

I was an english resident in trnc, got married 4yrs ago in the Trnc, I had to prove I was single from a uk solicitors letter, then get it stamped at the turkish embassy in London, with two of my family as witness'es. Then go to lefcosia embassy for them to put more stamps on it! The whole thing was expensive and a last minute rush, as was told a mth b4 by the registry people in Girne i had to do all this, there was no way out of it - I tried everything! On the plus side, my divorce a year later in the trnc was easy!!!!!

Jean Clark, a photographer on the island, also was told she had to go to UK to the consulate to get her papers signed in order to marry & thats despite living on the island for 20 odd years. Both are British. She got around it by marrying in the south & having a blessing in TRNC. I was divorced & British & we also had to go to the UK consulate with 2 witnesses in order to get the paperwork stamped before I could marry in the TRNC & that was last year.
