Buy or rent a car during our stays

We have been having a long discussion over here regarding the practicalities. of car hire, we are coming over to NC for approx 6 weeks this year and have worked out that carhire will cost approx £800.00, once I fully retire and things are different with elderly relatives (a delicate way of putting it) we intend to spend longer than the present 14 days at a time, more likely to be 6 weeks at time 3 times a year.

Question is it more practical to buy a car out there, we have a place to store it, and as a non-resident am I allowed to own a car in NC, also our Daughter and Son-in-Law will be coming out so their cost of carhire will added to the £800.00.

We know car prices are much higher in NC than UK, and although we have cars here that will qualify for import, the cost of export and taxes seem to out way the purchase prices in NC.
