Hi I wonder if anyone has advice on securing internet access via an unlocked smart phone. Can this be done with a Turkcell or Telsim "pay as you go" sim card? would you need a special data card or are the ordinary voice service cards sufficient. What are the costs / settings? thanks John

John,

Not to sure about the smart phone but I can do it with both my i-phone and my HTC touch. You need to change the settings slightly on your turkcell simcard but it will connect when you turn on 3G connection, it is pricey though on the pay as you go.

Thanks - good to know it is possible. Shame it is expensive, what is the best option?

Depends on your choices, if you are going to be coming regularly and you have a laptop or small netbook, you can buy a dongle with sim and buy 1 months connection.

If no laptop then you are kind of stuck with the phone but depending on where you will be staying, lots of venues will let you use the wireless system they have if you ask nicely.

I have the 3G active and to be honest, I am probably spending about 30 pounds per month for top ups but I don't use the 3G alot as most places I go have wireless and let me log on.

If you give an idea of what you are planning, you will probably get much better advice.

Thanks

I know many people use 3G dongles, but I was wondering if anyone has advice on securing internet access via an unlocked smart phone.

Do you need a special data card or are the ordinary voice service Turkcell or Telsim "pay as you go" sim card OK?

Are the settings the same as dongle

What are the costs

thanks John

I have the ordinary turkcell sim card in my unlocked iphone and I have also used it in my HTC touch which I believe would be classified as a smart phone. I mainly use either for GPS location searches but they do connect to the internet on the odd ocasion when I might want to check for some information.

All I had to do was change the setting for internet to internet.kktcell and then it picks up.

Not sure about the prices but I think there is a website that somone may hopefully advise on.

nd this which might give you some idea, I think this is for monthly paid but the rates shouldn't be too much different. If I can get anymore info I will update you.

This is howI have got connected after my modem broke last night.

Put SIM in unlocked Ipaq I had lying about.

Activated Bluetooth on Ipaq and Laptop (on Ipaq I had to setup the Dial up Networking service, under bluetooth settings)

Paired them.

Went into Network connections and setup a new dial up network

Followed wizard and entered the phone number *99#

Clicked Connect and hey presto back on the internet again (make sure phone/ipaq is not connect to turkcell before you try this).

I only have GPRS on the Ipaq but thatis faster than not having connection at all.

Hope this helps

Just to add to the above.

You possibly have two ways of connecting to the internet with your smart phone.

1. Via a 3G sim card, but of course your phone would have to be a 3G model.

This method can be very expensive, but for email use probably acceptable.

2. Via your WiFi setting. Here you would be connecting to a wireless network as found in some hotels or home network, or you may be in an eXtend hotspot area in which case you would need to buy a subscription (password and user name) from eXtend. This can be for a week, month or year (last time I used it)

Should have added that a local sim card for method 2 may not be necessary. It depends on whether your phone will function without registering with a phone company - although most UK sim cards will register with Turkcell through a reciprocal agreement.

Hotel Pia Bella gardens - other hotels or as mentioned above, eXtend hotspot (with purchased password)
