Please can anyone tell me: I am moving to northern cyprus for 6 months , and have relatives in the south of the Island who I want to visit often . Is it possible (by that I mean legal) to buy a second hand car in the South to use and keep in the North?

Salahi You can take a car temp to the southside for a period of 6 months then you either have to permanently import it there or take it out the country.

stubs - do you know how this works - is it no of day ,s , weeks . months , up to 6 months or 6 months in one period ? . it is also becoming a problem with cars coming across from the south with g/c or uk reg plates .when the crossing points first opened the time limit was 12 midnight , now it seems to be 30 day.s through metehan and some of the other crossing points , but customs officers have different views ? .

It aint worth it. I had a South registered car (I used to live in the South) and was using it here when we first moved across. About 3 months after moving here, Customs turned up on my doorstep and impounded the car immediately. I had to pay a fine to get the car out of the pound and then take the car over to the South and a sign a declaration that I would never (on pain of death) bring the vehicle back into the North. If you are only here for six months, I would suggest that you buy a 'cheap' runabout or see if you can arrange a good deal for a long term hire car. Paul

paul , i can see how when you reside in the trnc how one has to obey the laws , but if one is only visiting ,( staying 1 week , 1 month , 3 months . ect and coming in a motor car , the custom,s / police do not state how long a vehicle can stay . after crossing metehan or one of the other crossings , the north / south rules cause confusion ? . customs impounding cars .

Baxi Welcome to the TRNC where everything is as clear as mud. My advice is always to err on the side of caution where the 'authorities' and 'laws' are concerned. Laws and rules can change literally overnight and even the enforcers of the laws have differing interpretations. If Olive is intending to come here for a period of over 3 months then he/she will exceed the 90 day rule and should really apply for residency. Paul

Listen to "friendishpaul" and dont do it.My neighbour done the same thing, his car also got impounded and took us 3 days to get it back after paying 1000tl fine.Only to take it to south and leave it there. You want an easy life?As hard an expensive as it is,bring one over from uk.Or,buy one local.Unless of course, you also want to join with all the others that did it and now keep complaining about it.

Stubs; "You can take a car temp to the southside for a period of 6 months then you either have to permanently import it there or take it out the country" What good is in above comments when you do NOT live or have a property in the south.

baxi7; "yorgozlu , i live in the uk but use a trnc reg motor so what is the big deal ?" If you had known the difference, you wouldnt have asked that question. Some things in life are just complicated.TRNC is one of them. Not being an EU country doesnt help.

The rules are 'open to interpretation' - the only slight problem in that being: it depends by who!
