Always looking for good food ( but seldom succeeding ) here, we had read that the GINKO in Famagusta old town was worth a try, it certainly is an interesting building, we were told by the waiters that it had been a religious meeting place1000 or 2000 years ago, no one was very sure. ! The square it was in bordered by a partially but well restored Palace of the Venetians.

But what is par for the course here; it was ruined by three totally out of keeping modern bank buildings.

Back to the GINKO, the menu was quite exciting, several unusual soups; White lemon and almond, Fish soup Toulouse Lautrec, Rosemary and chicken, and Cucumber soup.

Salads and Main courses were equally as exotic many sounding very tempting, we chose the House salad, a generous bowl of Salad greens and herbs with pine nuts , walnuts, shredded crab, shrimps, and sweet corn, served with a choice of oils vinegars and dressings, it was a good starter.

Fish soup is favourite of ours, but it arrived looking like a

one of the best places to eat here is green valley at alsancak. every night the meal is 15tl. consists of meze and salad starter. main course varies every evening could be pork chop, steak diane, kebab etc along with vegetables, local potatoes done in the oven and chips followed by dessert. absolute bargain and always great food. well worth a try.

if anyone wants directions it is down the road towards the mare monte. host called seli. lovely chap and nothing is too much trouble.

as above marisa. once in alsancak, look for the sign for the mare monte (its quite large) and is down there. difficult to say left or right as don't know which way you would approach.

actually another place we visited last week impressed us. called freddies bar, has been recently taken over and we called in for lunch last thursday. all home made. i had salad which was very good but the guys couldn't resist the home made pie and chips which they said was first class and it did indeed look very good.

directions: main road from girne through alsancak passing into lapta. the bar is situated on the right hand side.

there is a sign for it on the main road.

then there is always the hut at lapta. one of our favourites.

we tried green valley, the meze was great but the main course was sparse and disappointing, we were the only ones there (6 of us)

I was surprised by this posting!!!

There are so many nice places to eat in North Cyprus. In all the years we have been over there I can only think of two meals that were not good.

Much better than here in the UK....well at least where we live....
