The new coalition government in the UK is so horrified by the sheer number of unworkable or unnecessary laws introduced by Labour over 13 years that they're asking this question of the British people. So - what specific laws do you seriously believe need to be scrapped ? We'll get the jokers on here with their answers of course but if replies could be kept 'on topic', some interesting results might emerge.

For starters, I'd say scrap the 24-hour drinking laws.

Wearing of seatbelts, speed limits, smoking ban.

Apparently, the time they were in power there was a new law for every day they were in government.

All human rights legislation which is being used by multitudes, at great financial and security costs, to avoid compliance with all reasonable laws, as it was predicted by the majority that this would occur if passed into law.

ALL of the Nanny State laws, people should be allowed to do whatever they like, providing it does not harm others.

Anything relating to Political Correctness, laws created to give people non-jobs enforcing them (like refuse bin inspectors). Human rights laws which take aware our right to be british and proud, snooping laws infringing our civil liberties.

Everon (4). I'll sign up for that one - litigation for every stupid excuse to claim compensation. Ban it!

Measey (5) Speed cameras. Oh yes! Poor old motorists get it every which way.

HildySmith (6) Ban THAT law. Latest case proves the point.

Quarmby (8) Totally agree, though I think that one was already being considered for demolition...

Exmouthfire (20) Absolutely. Too many non-job enforcers around.

Think the savings are beginning to mount up !

Ban the people that allow the stupid and ridiculous...and hide behind 'it's the law'...or it's 'human rights'...or it's 'politically correct'...or it's 'health and safety'...

And have no common sense or rational logic that allows a known bomber to stay in the UK, rather than deport him, because he may not be welcome in his own country!

Message 1 - well, you were certainly right with your comment about 'getting the jokers on here'.

It started off so well, too.

For example, when was "respect" a law. Which government brought that in?

Msg 25 & 26

Respect should be earned but in schools, it can only be done with discipline. Teaching children & youngsters what behaviouur is acceptable and what is not should start in the home-then in the schools. ASBOs are seen as a badge of honour for lack of discipline. I was caned at school - and you are right - IT DID ME NO HARM - I was warned about 4 times before the caning so I had the choice to behave and didn't so paid the penalty. Also being made to stand in the corridor was a matter of shame (also a problem as our class was next to the Head Mistresses office) and anyone walking down the corridor knew you were in trouble.

They should ban all the laws which have stripped teachers of the ability to control a class of 30 youngsters when the parents often cannot control one. I had 3 children, 2 well behaved and the youngest one who was very difficult and caused problems in school when 5-7 yrs old, so I referred myself and him to a child psychologist-best thing I ever did

Seriously, the one that says that entitlement to free NHS treatment is Residency-based, and not contribution-based (Not that I would advocate charging for Emergency Treatment)

The one that says you have to pay tax on your Pension, no matter where you live

(More than a 'bit' of Self-Interest creeping in there... )

The ones that say that a 'Life' sentence doesn't mean 'Life' at all, and allow all sorts back out on the streets to do it all over again (reminds me of that song "If I had to do it all over again, I'd do it all over you" )

'Care in the Community' which I think is just a Money-Saving cop-out

The laws that allow 'Gang-Masters' to operate and keep workers in Penury (or Penge, for that matter )

The law that bans cyclists from riding on the pavement - I mean, have you actually TRIED riding a bike on the roads? - SCARY! - I'm not talking about those Kamikaze dispatch cyclists, they should be hung by their Lycra thingamajigs

The law that allows Private Car Clampers to oper

Bring back capital punishment, get rid of the people who say its wrong to deport any foreign person that as illegally entered the country,or creates civil unrest. Bring the nhs back into state ownership, plus give the police the power to police.

Keithcaley (32 & the rest). You redeemed yourself after that one (32) !! lol.

Somebody wrote in to the 'Telegraph' letters page today on the subject of 'which laws should be scrapped'.

"There have been 3,000 new laws introduced in the UK since 1997. Even lawyers don't know about them all. How are WE supposed to know? Scrap every law put on the statute books in the past 13 years - unless any of them are absolutely essential." Don't think we can add much more to that but sadly, many of 'Labour's Laws' will likely remain on the books, even in diluted form.
