The main thrust is very clear and positive. I am not a lawyer so no point dissecting interpretations here. 10th June is the date I believe and this motion could be pivotal for the future fortunes of NC!

Hi Stubs, I am well aware that direct trade “exists”as you say but please understand not all the protocols for direct trade in all its forms are in place as a result of the embargo! Surely you can appreciate a basic example that any high street in NC will not contain the same trading names/brands as high streets in other countries................Not to mention the real physical and political obstacles standing in the way of the economy at this moment. I posted the link to the subject to be debated at the EU parliament (not a link to some newspaper article) which demonstrates a real possibility of future change for NC. Think on

Paddy With respect what changes do you see? The last time I was in Nicosia I seen various branded shops, Nike, Phillips. DHL Office the list can go on. Even supposed what you are saying is true, do you think the likes of M&S, Debenhams etc are forming a que to come to North Cyprus? Many of the obstacles standing in the way of the economy are actually from within the TRNC, I have made many postings on the subject and have shared my experiences of this over the years. Here is a prediction for you. If these barriers you say are in place come down very few changes will happen. The TRNC government will blame the GC's for Tesco or any other high street retailers for not coming. Big organisation will not be bothered with a country which only has a population of what the TRNC has and the demographics of it. Even moe so if they already have a branch somewhere else in Nicosia. If anybody thinks that things will dramatically change then they are mistaken.

Even if these companies wanted to come to NC,it wouldn't be direct trade, but rather direct purchasing. Maybe the authorities and businessmen should be starting to plan on what they can manufacture, grow, or provide that could be exported. Service industries are the only things that come to mind at the moment, medical holidays for example. You dont as a nation earn by merely finding it easier to buy other countries goods. The real advantage of direct trade is that it is a form of recognition and would make way for things like direct flights.

Maybe missing the point here....? The whole NC economy could be kick-started by tax concessions to induce inward investment, tax free trade through the ports etc. The chance of foreign money pouring in to NC will dramatically alter the whole economy if NC is fully open for business. Look forward to the benefits this would bring and the transformation of the whole infrastructure. If the EU votes this though, the momentum would be huge. Mother Turkey can afford to relax all the taxes in NC if it does not have to pay to prop it up as it is now and before long Ercan will be extending the runway to accept direct (non-stop flights) Who knows, Kyrenia could be a tax free zone!! Think on............again!

Hey Paul, Thanks for the link. The Bubbles are on the back foot and we cant underestimate the power of trade and money to overcome political barriers. Do you have freehold in NC? If so, I hope you will be able to look back in a few years and think you made the RIGHT call! That goes for anyone who has bought here and goes a long way and will make the pain worth every penny. Sorry Hector, cant help salivating for my tiny plot! I hope the saying will be "fill your boots!"

One step at a time Paddy. And spare a thought for the locals,it is they who have had to put up with all the poor treatment they have received for longer then i would care to remember. In my view its not just about looking after number one.We are foreigners who have taken a punt on their soil,so show a little respect to the people that where hear before we had even heard of this wonderful place, Paul.

You are right Paul. But after all the hassle, its just desserts and I wish the locals all the best for backing the right horse, namely Turkey and not Greece, in a long and difficult race. They will benefit more than anyone - I hope, and good luck to them! They have been abused for too long!

| Re msg 17 "fill your boots...." Its people with attitudes like that which have made North Cyprus the way it is today. Many ex-pats have none or very little regard for TC people instead use that as a guise for their own ends many of which have done none or very research on the island as is evident in your msg 19. Paddy Many of the barriers to direct trade come from within. Feel free to lecture the world when you have at least done something notable regards this issue I look forward to hearing what YOU have tried to achieve for somewhere you chose to make a significant investment in. | Oh Dear Stubs and Greylag, I didn’t have you down for doom merchants and you should think on (told you 3 times now!!!) before you cast your aspersions on people you don’t even know msg 17-18. How dare you judge me in this small minded way! FYI. When I posted this topic I copied and pasted the attached link which was sent to me by a prominent MEP who I have been lobbying through my local MEP, who I see most weeks and with whom I discuss the Cyprus problem and the plight of the TC peoples (that’s 2 NEW "yes" votes for the TCs in the EU Parliament matey) OK I do have many contacts (in the UK, Turkey and NC) and spend time working any way I can to expose the injustices of the TC peoples and their suffering at the hands of the EU etc. As such I do not have to justify myself to you, or anyone else on this board and I will not do as you ask. I feel sorry that all the good work that is going on in the political background draws negative people like you to ridicule it Think on.. |

what is the link between companies being able to sell their stuff here directly, and property values going up. ? Property prices are usually led by supply and demand, and there is already a huge oversupply in Europe and North Africa of holiday homes combined with a diminishing customer base due to worldwide economic factors.

Very good Paddy. Make your mind up will you? Firstly you claim that "we underestimate the power of trade and money to overcome political barriers" yet you claim to lobby MEP's. Tell me have you even tried to open a business in the TRNC? I can tell you from experience the obstacles put in your way, even more so if you are foreign, are horrific. If you want to do any kind of international trade forget it they (the TRNC) make it so difficult for you. Hence I can tell you from my experiences many barriers are from within. Paddy would you be doing what you are doing on behalf of TC's if you didnt have property there?

Very Good Paddy The thing is people can see through what you are saying including TC's. They have seen and heard what you have said millions of times before.
