i have just flown home from ercan via istanbul to manchester. we bought our duty free whisky and vodka from ercan. carried them on our turkish airlines flight to istanbul. went through transit area and passport control with duty free bags and spirits. when we were boarding we went through scanning area and was told big problem. i asked what big problem and the guy told me liquids were not allowed when i told him there were duty free from ercan he told me to put the items in the bin. asked to see someone else who told me to put them in a sealed canvas bag. luckily i was carrying a bag on board that would fit items in. this was took off me and put in the hold. istanbul has duty free shops i said and there reply was duty free bought in istanbul is fine but duty free bought in ercan has to be put in luggage i asked how can you do this as you put your luggage in befor you go into duty free. just got blank look. this is the first time this has happened as i have took duty free before

i bought duty free liquids in ercan boarded a turkish airlines flight to istanbul got off the plane went to transit never left the airport because you cant and tried boarding another turkish airline flight. can you tell me why then can they sell you duty free at ercan only for it to be took off you at istanbul. the bottles were sealed not open and if you buy duty free at istanbul you still have to go through the same controlled area AFTER you buy duty free it looks like you have never flown this route yourself all i am trying to do is warn people about this i have flown this route twice sometimes three times a year and never had this problem before. in istanbul you buy your duty free then go through the controlled area got it

This has been discussed on here before. It is only liquids they will ask you to leave behind. This would apply to any airport. If, say, you turned up at Manchester airport with bottles/liquids, they would not allow you to take them 'airside', i.e. you are going from 'landside' to 'airside'. This has basically nothing to do with Duty Free as such - they would not do the same with cigarettes. As to your point about why they sell it to you at Ercan - without telling you it would be confniscated at Istanbul - I don't know - business, I suppose.

1, go to ercan airport, 2, check in, luggage taken off you, 3, go through passport control, 4,do some duty free shopping, 5,board plane to istanbul, 6,get off plane and go through passport control and transit area still with duty free from ercan,7 do some more duty free at istanbul if you want, 8, go and wait in lounge at the gate the plane is going from to england. no duty free allowed dont forget you do not see your suit cases until you get to england

If you buy duty free at Ercan and then leave the airport at Istanbul, no problem. It is to do with taking un-contolled liquids onto a plane at Istanbul that is the problem. Got it!

if you bought said goods in a controlled part of the airport and never left that controlled airside controlled area then they should not have been a problem. got it

When buying at the duty free shop in Larnaca I have always been asked if Gatwick is my final destination. If I was transitting there the goods would be put in a sealed bag with the receipt and I would not be allowed to open them until I reached my final destination.

Coming out bought perfume duty free at Birmingham it was placed in a sealed transparent bag with receipt No problem at transit at Ataturk because of the sealed official bag Ercan needs to do the same or don't buy they are right at Istanbul its international air law the final security check is when you go into the holding area at Aturturk

By your "Duty Free" in the local supermarkets at less cost than the Ercan duty free shop - then pack them in your hold luggage! Simple.

We had exactly the same problem last year and they went to put them in the bin. I stopped them and took them off them and said I would drink them myself. They said I could not take them onto the aircraft. Our luggage was still on the plane as we were in transit. They had to put us up in a hotel, so the next morning I gave the booze to the hotel staff - Airport staff obviously have all the booze they can drink - in their bins.

Unfortunatley this is just a fact of life when flying. You will be amazed how many people still try to take liquids through security check in UK and they STILL get upset. As for buying in Ercan Duty Free, it is amazing the authorities can afford to keep those shops open at the stupid prices they charge. NEVER BUY at Ercan 90% of things will be found cheaper in supermarkets.

Wanderer message 10 is correct this applies to all fluids, pastes etc. Unhappily at Ercan they do not seem to have a facility for security bags. So unless you are staying on the same plane all the way you will lose your duty frees in Turkey. (If you are unlucky and have to be moved to another aircraft you would again lose those duty free items unless they were security bagged.)

Le Msg 20 you can also fly CTA no problems but in both cases, if you are unlucky and have to be moved to another aircraft you would again lose those duty free items unless they were security bagged - which does not happen in Ercan.

What makes me laugh is that they sell all the same stuff at the same prices !!!! Why not just have one place as there is no competition allowed at all....
