Hello, Any idea as to how we can prevent birds nesting underneath the tiles above the roof guttering. We just love the birds but not the nasty stuff they keep dropping over our terrace area. Thanks Art

Hi Art We have tried numerous things to stop pigeons. I have some pigeon spikes to bring over and I have also bought two birds of prey decoys to put on our roof. I have been told owls are best. So..............fingers crossed. Linda

If it is a problem with birds nesting under the roof tiles then you will need to buy some expanding foam and either pay some one to apply it to the underneath of the roof tiles or do it yourself. Me? I do not like heights so I will always pay some one else to do it. AJ

They do work but you must exert sufficient downwards pressure to make the spikes work correctly.............. Sorry, feeling mischievous today.

I've had seagulls nesting on a disused chimney on the roof of my house in the UK. I'm getting Bird Busters in to remove the now empty nest and put spikes on the disused chimney before the birds return to the nest in Spring.

I guess there are many solutions to the problem some more effective than others. We are lucky and not in a "flap" yet as though many villas around us are plagued by pigeons and other birds we seem to be immune even with gaps under tiles. We rarely see a pigeon on our roof or in the garden. Can only think it is because we have a bungalow and our two cats patrol the roof and garden regularly. The birds seem to recognise it as a no go area. Chegwin should be careful going on roofs wielding spikes as the shooting season commences at the end of the month !

You could always try encouraging stray cats to live in your garden, for some unknown reason birds tend to keep away from cats. We have about 12 cats and not a bird in sight.

We had the same problem 3 years ago and in the end we used our old floating foam sticks and cut them into 6 inch strips and pushed them under the tiles and haven't had any sparrows under there since. We even went and bought two new ones to give a better fit. The foam also lets the air circulate. Free advice, is this really N.Cyprus !!

Ron I have done that with expanding foam under the tiles, but i need to know if the spikes work on ledges to stop the droppings coming on to the balconys and patios.

Hi John, What we did was to buy some fine chicken mesh and fix it between the tiles and the roof and it has worked perfectly. I can't post pictures on here but if you email me on linnyloos@live.co.uk I will send a photo tonight to show you exactly what we did. It wasn't expensive and it doesn't look too unsightly either but it definitely did the trick. Linda

We had spikes put on the tops of our air-cons and it stopped the pigeons nesting there but the sparrows were still getting in behind the air-cons so i stuck some small plastic mesh at the back and this seems to have done the trick, touch wood )

wattys Message 18: 'Which is the best of two evils cat crap or bird crap, the cats would'nt last very long with next doors dogs around.' Most cats do not crap in their own back yard, we 'look after' at least 12 cats and they tend to crap in every one else's garden. Secondly we have just taken on a street dog (Brindle Staff) and believe me the cats rule the roost (pun). The cats are not afraid of the dog and one experience we had not so long ago was that a friend of ours brought his new dog around to show us and one of 'our' cats decided to launch itself at the dog and we had to pull it off of the dogs neck. The dog was visibly shaken and the owner had to go and put it in his car. Never underestimate the power of cats. AJ

Darren Done that has soon as you shoot one another one turns up, they just keep flying from one house to another dropping the crap. There must be someone who has used these spikes and knows if they work or not on the end of the roof ledges.

I have the spikes on top of the aircon (6 euro a metre in the south). Certainly seems to be working. vadiev, I like your idea re the "woggles" and will give it a go in some gaps.

Hi magicart, The spikes definitely do work as I use them on commercial buildings in the UK but it obviously depends on how you stick them down and where. It is impossible to spike everywhere but if you have pigeons fouling down the side of the house you would really only need to spike the leading edge as the pigeons then wont be able to get to the edge and leave their droppings. Depending on the type fo spikes you use(the ones with the metal spikes are best as the plastic ones go brittle after a while, you can bend the spikes to suit the situation. With regards to why some houses get them and why some dont the reason is that when the villas are being built if pigeons were nesting here while it was empty then the pigeons have a homing instinct and will always return here until they die off. Owls dont work and neither do hawks as the pigeons are too wise to this. We also use netting which is much more effective. If anybody needs any more info or advice let me know.

The pigeons round here are after the water. No houses=No pools=No bloody pigeons! Like most of Cyprus, the place should be a desert.

You can get the soft plastic finger type eaves fillers at the yapi opposite Ibos. They work fine if just trimmed as required, and inserted under the tiles and will certainly keep the bids out. Euro 1.5 per meter length.
