Has anyone had their dog's teeth professionally cleaned? One of mine has decay and I must take care of it soon. Which vet did you use? Was anesthesia used? Please share you experience, thanks.

True story from reader's digest: The 4 yearold grand daughter is stopping at her grandmothers for the night. The next morning the little girl says "Grandma, before I went to bed I saw that Peppy's teeth were really yellow, so I cleaned them for him" "Oh", said Grandma, I'll have to buy you another toothbrush" Her grand-daughter replies: "No you won't Grandma, I used yours!"

A little tip on keeping your pets teeth clean, is by including crunchy foods in their diets, ie biscuits and/or chicken necks or something similar...dogs in the wild do not get their teeth cleaned, and don't usually lose them to decaying. Molly, there are quite a few vets on the island, (as i have never had this done, i can't personally recommend one) so perhaps you could ring around and find out. Here's Pertev's number, you could start with him....maybe other members could post their vets number also for you to call. 0392 815 8084 Would you please let us know how you get on, as i'm sure there are a few folk would like to know about this. Hope this helps a little bit. DD

Our dog loves raw carrots and apparently they are really good for keeping their teeth clean and their breath sweet... They don't provide much nourishment as a dogs digestive system can't breakdown the carrot well enough to extract the goodness, only cooked carrots can but as the carrots are good for dental hygiene that's OK. I'm sure if you talk to Firdez or Pertev (vets) they will advise you on cleaning services.

Thanks for the advice. I will keep you apprised. They only eat hard dog food and biscuits. The problem with pugs is overcrowding. Often an extraction is necessary for oral hygiene. I tried carrots and they will not eat them. I'll give it another try. Actually my dogs loved eating grapes. Then I recalled that they were toxic to most dogs so I stopped. I will call around and let you know how we make out. Enjoy the weekend!

Have always fed my dogs raw carrots as treats, and their teeth are perfect. They consume about three kilos a week!!! The smaller dogs are fed the smaller carrot, as it is easier on their teeth.

I tried again yesterday to feed them carrots. Sat on the floor eating one myself telling them how delicious it was making all kind of "mmmm" noises. They only smelled it and walked off. Snobs!

Molly as a general rule avoid any food with seeds or pips... dogs' digestive systems are not genetically primed for processing them and the plants they are from are often toxic to dogs...

snd, you can go to any chemist and get a worming pill. They are not very expensive, and if you coat them in something yummy, like a piece of cheese, or (my dogs favorite), butter....they will go down quickly and with no nonsense at all...also ask the chemist to give you the stickers for the worming pill to put into your pet passport. Hope this eases your fears DD
