Hi, what sort of money should we bring on holiday with us? Do most places accept turkish lira, euros or sterling? Are there many exchange places in kyrenia ,to change our travellers cheques (should we take them?), and where are they please. Any info would be gratefully received!!!!!!!

There is an ATM in the high street in Kyrenia as well, plus another couple on the main coast road. We tend to bring some GBP and then withdraw YTL as we need it - the fx rate from our bank has always been decent. Have a great holiday - it is a lovely place to be !

Babs - You will have a great time - it is a very nice place, where abouts are you staying ? There is also an exchange bureau on the high street in Kyrenia as well. The weather will be extremely hot and sunny - take a lot of SPF and Mosquito sprays. There are fabulous restaurants all over - being your first time, try Set Fish in the harbour - also Kybele or Abbey Bell Tower (both in Bellapais) - they will also pick you up and take you back to your hotel / villa. We are going out next week as well and really looking forward to it (we like it so much we bought a villa 2 years ago after our first visit !) If you have any questions before you go use this forum - the people are very nice and there is a wealth of knowledge !

hi babs. if your bringing your credit cards check before you leave with the company that you can use them abroad. i had mine stopped once for security reasons they said. which was good of them but the card was not stolen. so check first.

The issue on credit cards isn't one of not allowed to use abroad but of a change in use pattern. Always let you card company know where you are going on holiday to avoid the trap of rejection. Also look out for charges here, you can pay upt to 5% commision to the vendor so always ask before using. For cah, there are severl exchange booths in Central Girne but check the ex. rate first. One in particular will rob you!!!!!

Watch out for ATMs, unlike the UK, they give you the money then your card back! You could be walking away counting your cash with the card still in the machine. Lem

I agree re Nationwide, however I think it disrespectful to expect traders to accept sterling. Don't be rude, use YTL. It is the local currency!! Would you use Dollars in the UK, or would you consider it inappropriate?

Hilltop, Well said. Why should people walk into shops "expecting" shop keepers to take sterling. No doubt same people will whinge when they get a lousy exchange rate. Change your sterling at one of the exchange shops and then use for rest of holiday, easy!!!!!!!!! No I will not reveal, just check the rates you will soon figure it out. From experience there is one on left of main street in Girne (usually 2 ladies in residence) and one near Dome Hotel which offer best rates usually.

Know some TC traders well and they welcome sterling, in fact most have sterling accounts for their savings. Furthermore many shops quote prices in sterling, therefore expect payment in sterling. Sterling, dollars international currency normal worldwide. Sorry guys don't agree with ytl only theory. Do use YTL for small purchases though, but otherwise often mixture of both! regards p

Pilgrim. Have to say I agree with CIH. If you pay in Sterling in Restaurants & Supermarkets you will not get the best deal & you may find you are given the wrong change too in some supermarkets. Change your Sterling in the Exchange Bureau half way down Girne high street on the left where you will get the best rates. Lived here 6 yrs & do know the ropes.

Pilgrim, I cannot understand your comment on keeping savings in sterling????????? Nobody will keep sterling accounts at 5% when ytl pays 18% that includes me!!! Yes some larger shops sell there goods in sterling, euros or dollars but that is because that is the currency they paid for goods in. They do not want to risk currency fluctuations by pricing in ytl for furniture etc. As a resident I would never dream of asking to pay for goods in anything other than ytl except if specifically priced otherwise.
