A friend visited the Eye Clinic in Girne yesterday and was told she had cataract in her left eye. The resident doctor told her a fifteen minute operation, which she could perform today would cost £800 Has anyone else had experience of treatment at this clinic,or had cataract operation elsewhere ,if so what does op involve, aftercare etc,and what costs are involved? Thanks for any information and advice Jen

It might be worth a second opinion because they told me I had a cataract in my right eye. Not only got 2nd opinion but third and - no cataracts. Your friend`s diagnosis may well be correct but it would be worth a second opinion.!!

I visited this clinic with sore eyes some 2 years ago. Paid £400 for the pain of having a stye lanced and drained though could not see or feel a stye. After 3 visits was told I had cateracts and could have an operaton the next day for £800. Declined and went for further treatment elsewhere and during that treatment asked if I had cateracts. Was told that the level of drops I had in my eyes at that moment was insufficient for a 100% diagnosis but certainly sufficient to confirm absolutely that if I did have cateracts they were so minute as to be nowhere near the need for surgery. I have friends who had similar experiences and were declared free of cateracts subsequently by UK opticians. My eyes have not been sore since and I have near perfect eyesight for night driving for example. I only need reading glasses for bad light at age 67. Strongly recomend that your friend does not submit to surgery unless it undoubtedly needed. In all events I wish your friend well ASP.

This also happened to me. I am hearing this story over and over again. People should be made aware and boycott the place. I got another opinion in the uk first of all with an optician who said I did not have cataracts and then not being happy with that went to see an Opthalmic Specialist who told me the same.

If you have cataracs in your eyes your vision is very poor, age related cataracs start at the outside & work inwards & are normally slow growing, whereas cataracs due to eye surgery start at the middle & grow outwards & vision is lost very very quickly. Unless your friend is having vision difficulties that are affecting her life she should leave well alone in my opinion.

I'm afraid this problem has been going on at the eye clinic for at least 8 years. People being told they need operations for cataracts. When a 2nd opinion has been sought here & in the UK., the same people told they do not need an operation. This story has come up over & over on BBs long before C44 started.
