Unless you have some sort of private income, or a large amount of capital, you would find it difficult to survive here - the minimum wage is around 1200 TL per month, and jobs are vey hard to come by - not impossible though. Good written and spoken Turkish would be a distinct advantage, or possibly some specialist knowledge / work experience. It's a bit difficult to advise further, as your profile doesn't have much detail... If you can afford to come here and rent a place for 6 months, and suss it out, then you'll have more of a feel for whether you will like it / fit in, and the work opportunities available. Be aware that the economic situation here is not good, and doesn't seem to be getting any better By the way, moving to a different Country won't rid you of your problems - they'll follow you! Good luck.

Emigrate - for the purpose of permanent relocation of residence - if that is what you mean then you indicate you move here lock stock and barrel whilst leaving nothing behind you but dust! Done that, happy with it. But keep in mind that it is not a thing to be done lightly and you need to do a lot of research first. Keith has the answer - come here and rent but stay for a year so you find out how cold the winter is as well as how hot the summer is, it may not be the place for you but you will never know until you try. Lots of people will give you lots of advice but you must try it for yourself before you can make up your own mind. I worked for us but took us a long time to make sure it would and then another three years permanent here (no running back home for cheap socks and missing favourite beer or grandkids) to be really sure. Whatever you do - good luck, its not a bad place and I could mention many worse.

Hi Pat, Welcome on board, it is nice to have another Paddie. I cannot imagine anyone ever wanting to leave Cork!! Isn't it the centre of the known world?? Seriously, I was stationed in Cyprus with the UN and my soul has never really left the place. I have bought a place but I have to keep working until my kids sod off and leave me to drink myself to death. You will find the TRNC an easy place to settle in to. Driving is on the same side (mostly), electical applicances are the same and English is widely spoken. However it is 'different' and it is the Middle East where not all things are as they may appear. Follow the advice above, rent for a year, spend a winter when it gets surprisingly cold and there can be little to do. Make sure you have enough cash to get you by. Good luck whatever your choice is. Maybe two Corkmen can meet up in Cyprus sometime. Dermot
