Lilli. Thanks a bunch, my wife is salivating already which means a deteriorating bank balance! She adores Italian produce and is addicted to cheese, particularly the really smelly stuff, which you can't get here (thank God!). Actually, I am looking forward to you opening too. No doubt you will keep us all informed of the opening date. We wish you every success.

Simbas, tatty bread are potato scones, a bit like blini's without the egg. We have them hot with butter melting on them or fried with breakfast. Yummy. Lilli, I am from North Down, still considered Irish abroad though. I will certainly come and introduce myself, our wee countryfolk are definately in the minority in TRNC !!!! It'll be lovely to have somebody who understands my accent. WOT! I'm glad that neither of us is from Co. Cork (Apologies already if anyone reading this is) We'd probably have to learn Turkish to understand one another! Just kiddin' For Both Of You The recipie for tatty bread. (Top secret, don't give it to anyone else) 8oz warm mashed potato 1/2 teaspoon salt 1oz melted butter 2oz self raising flour (or plain if you only have that, they will just be slightly flatter but just as good) Mash the butter into the potatoes and add the salt Work in the flour with your hands to make a pliable dough Knead lightly and roll out on a floured board 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick Cut into circles with a floured cutter ( or the rim of a glass) Lightly flour a frying pan, no oil is neccessary and cook in the (quite) hot pan for about 3 minutes each side, or until golden. Serve warm with butter, toast them or fry with breakfast. As a variation, add chopped spring onions to the warm mash at the beginning. Or replace the flour with oatmeal, this makes what we call 'Pratie Oaten'

Lilli and Chessman, Have you taken leave of your senses. From Wales? Best black pudding comes from Scotland? Have you never heard Marsh and Baxter Brierley Hill. West Midlands. The Bury Black Pudding Company. Bury Lancashire. I am a Black Country Lad from Cradley Heath. West Midlands (home of the brave) You lot will be claiming that The Scots invented haggis and whiskey next. All The Scots ever invented was, short measures, tight fistedness, and Gordon Brown, a shameful history...ask Jock1 , wackyjim. and Greg. The truth will be out 24/9. Oh well! Back to repairing Hadrians Wall! wyn

Chessman, What is the recipie for laverbread? Is that the stuff made with seaweed? I am asking because my neighbour has just given me a huge bag of 'Dulse' as we call it here. He was out early on the beach picking it this morning, in glorious sunshine I might add. For you people who don't know what that is, it's edible seaweed. It is a dark red colour and rich in iron. I do have to say though that it is an equired taste and a little goes a long way, so if I could make something from it, it wouldn't go to waste.

Hi Ballyboffin. Yes it is the stuff made from edible seaweed. From memory it is boiled for a few hours and then fried after rolling it in oatmeal. I am not sure if anything else is added or done to it though. Traditionally it was had for breakfast with cockles and bacon. I think it is quite versatile and used in quite a few ways. I dont have any recipes for it but I am sure there would be something on the internet. You are quite right, it is very much an acquired taste. It is stacked full of vitamins and loads of iron so is mega healthy if it can be stomached! Don't go near a magnet after eating it though!

Hi Wyn I lived in Kidderminster for some time and had great times in Cradley. Do you remember the Cider House and the Fox at Stourton, my old hunting grounds. When ever I go back I am usually found at MerryHill. Anyway we will get black pud wherever it comes from here.

Lilli, I have just had a vision of a wee woman dressed in an Italian flag frock wearing a red beard and a green leprechaun hat beckoning cars towards the deli !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! At least you'd be noticed. Sorry, I'll go and take my tablets now. Chessman, I looked up your laverbread. I think maybe I'll give that a miss, but thanks anyway. The Dulse has all dried up now anyway so I am off to throw it back into the sea and do my bit for the environment. Improving my seaweed footprint, so to speak. LOL Both xxx Pat

Chessman, Hey that's not fair, Champ is lovely, especially now that we have the new Norn Iron spuds! Rosscoff's is still going, though I think that they have changed the name. You must be very wealthy if you have been there! Our Paul has several resturants now, even one at the International airport but we can't afford to eat there. We are so poor that we have to eat seaweed and of course Champ! LOL

Ballyboffin. A poor Irish woman/man? That'll be the day! LOL. I used to work for an International Company and I loved Ireland so much that I decided to develop business there. Visited Belfast/Newtonaards many times in the 1980/90's. It was on expenses, so the company paid! That's why my Irish friends probably introduced me Mr Rankin's (the God!) establishments. We have our own food God now - lilli.

Hi Lilli, Small world. No I don't know the establishments you mention. I actually live in the North East and have done so for the last 30 years. The Black Country brings back many memories, but in those days we were young enough to eat Black pudding, and Sherwoods Fish and Chips cooked in dripping. Hot Pork sandwiches with stuffing. Oh well dream on! I shall make a point of coming with my wife Julie on our next visit, and try your Bistro. It all sounds very exciting, and I am delighted for you. Good Luck to you Sir, wyn

Chessman, It's a small world, fancy you knowing Newtownards, I live 15 minutes from there, Just down the coast. It's a great shopping town now with lots of nice restaurants, though Mr Rankin has not invested there yet. I was just joking when I said that I have never been. We went there for our anniversary a few years ago. It was actually quite embarrassing. My husband had brought £50 with him in cash, but had forgotten the credit cards. Anyway, we arrived and had a look at the menu to see what we could afford. We thought that we would have soup to start and then steaks, but then we realised that the veg, potatoes etc were extra and we didn't have enough money. So what we did was, we ordered the soup and that was OK, very nice actually and we thought that we'd share a steak with all the trimmings. After all we had shared everything else for all those years. The meal came and the waiter asked me if I would like to order anything, I told him quietly what had happened and that we were going to share the meal because we share everything anyway. He gave me a strange look and must have reported it to the chef, as he came out and had a look at us. Next thing was, he brought out another steak etc and told me it was with Paul's compliments. I was wishing the ground would open, as he said it quite loudly and you know how bright and open that restaurant was. I couldn't eat a bite and my husband was tucking in as if he'd never eaten before. The waiter came back over and asked me how the food was as I hadn't touched a bite. It was so embarrassing that I couldn't eat anything. As quietly as i could I had to explain that we had been married 30 years and that we share everything, I just had to wait for my husband to finish before I could start my meal. 'Do you always have to do that' he asked, 'Oh Yes' I replied,we really do share everything........................................................... I'm just waiting for my turn with the teeth !!!!! BOOM BOOM!!!

Ballyboffin. Brilliant story Pat. It was good of the great man to do that though! I must go back one day. Belfast must be much nicer without the yellow (I think) barriers. I'd like to visit Scrabo again too. Perhaps when lilli is a millionairess (shortly!) we can persuade her to open up an Irish/Welsh 'deli'! The mind boggles at the possible combinations! Regards Geoff

Chessman, Oh dear, Oh dear, Oh dear, Great story What???? No wonder the Irish reckon that no other nationality can understand their jokes, though it might be the accent Duhh, read it again and scroll down. I was gonna' post another but I will be wasted hmmphh! You wouldn't recognise Belfast now. The city is beautiful and said to be one of the safest in the UK. It has fabulous designer shops and new shopping malls, even a 'Belfast Eye' just a bit smaller than the one in London. House prices there are through the roof too. A designer apartment in the centre of Belfast will set you back 450k. Having worked in Belfast in the 'bad old days' I remember too well the yellow barriers and standing in line to be searched before getting through the turnstyles into the city. It was a way of life I hope never returns. Scrabo is just the same, still standing there guarding the peninsula and a lovely sight on a sunny day. You should come back for a visit, you'd love the place now. I agree with you about Lilli's deli, it could be very interesting to mix the regional foodstuffs. I would have to draw the line though at seaweed sodabread. BTW What other foods are national dishes in England, Scotland & Wales? It might give Lilli some ideas of what her customers are craving, apart from the lovely Italian food that Guido is going to provide.

Ballyboffin. I did get it, which is why I used the word 'story' and the exclamation mark. However, re reading what I wrote is rubbish! Me Geoff having bad day, me go to pub, me dozy git! National dishes for England and Scotland are probably best left to the English and Scots. My two favourite Welsh dishes are Cowl and salt marsh lamb. I am sure Simbas is far more knowledgeable on this than me. I feel a new thread coming on here!

Well, I've done it. I have just come back from Lilli and Guido's deli/bistro. First and foremost they are two of the nicest people I have ever met. The ambience fits with their personalities - extremely warm (not the temperature!) friendly and welcoming. The products they have on offer are superb quality. The pate is to die for. Actually, so is everything else! My wife thinks she has gone to heaven and that is exactly where she will go if she buys that much again! Having said that, I was just as bad. We will be going back many times. Lilli/Guido, nice one!

Hope to be living there by September time so will be visiting your deli, I make quite a good tatty bread, this however must be fried and served with fried bacon, nothing like it. I wont comment on the fact that your from Limerick as you obviously have enough problems!!! really only joking. Roscommon born and Donegal for 30 years and hopefully TRNC very soon. Good luck with new venture and will be in to visit.

Glad to hear your first day went so well....by the comments on this board by members who managed to get to the opening day I get the impression that you will do very well in your new venture. How you are juggling a new shop and the puppy saga is beyond me...I really do admire you as I'm sure others will. Although neither my hubby and I don't drive (taking lessons at the moment) so are limited at getting around..if there is anything we can do to help you out keep us in mind and send me a post with "HELP" and I will forward my mobile number. Take care and don't over do it.

All the comments on this post are making me hungry, suddenly I am craving Pate rather than the soda bread (na, na,na, na,na ) and jam that I was planning to have for lunch! Can't wait to try out all the delicacies you have on offer. BTW Are you a restaurant as well? |
