In some football threads on C44 primitive nationalism glorifies. Isn't it possible to pre-enjoy an interesting match like England-Germany without naming the opponents 'the arrogant Huns' and more? What is wrong with people who seem to think this is still 1945? We all live(d) in Europe 2010, we should think and talk about the future. Even in sports: respect your opponent with the world famous British sense of humour. I'm afraid it's time this generation vanishes - I hope our children and grandchildren think about sports (and a 65 years old war) in a healthier way than some here do. Just a thought for the early Sunday morning.

It is a pity that Brits aren't more nationalistic then they are, and in respect of more important things in life than football, Geoff

Football is a primitive, tribal game. Just look anywhere in the world to see how "local teams" supporters react. Galatasaray/Fenebace, Milan/Inter, barcelona/Real madrid, then onto the teams in Argentina and Uruguay!!!!! At least the England/Germany thing tends to remain in the press, these other teams usually end up in riots.

just because we can say that it isn't as bad here as it is there, doesn't mean here is good, it just means it is not so bad. I can understand why my granfather called them the Huns but he died 20 odd years ago.

Offensive Slang. Used as a disparaging term for a German, especially a German soldier in World War I. Not too sure there are any players in the team who were around in WW I

RE msg 8, vincent1: I've told you before: people who give their outspoken opinion anonymously are not worth a serious reply. P.S. Also once more but probably in vain again: in the English language it's an error to use two exclamation marks at the end of a sentence.

This is a game of football. Our national sport. England is the natural home of football, a legacy that we have given to the World. Yet some small minded moronic (Richard Cranium) types will denigrate it to an opportunity to vent their racist bias. England is better place without you.

Sal, The English were very good at codifying the rules of sports and thus claimed them as belonging to Britain. Various sports suffer the misnomer of being 'British' or 'English'... Golf, cricket and football among them. People were kicking inflated bladders about for sport long before the British dreamt up a set of rules...

Personally, I think people are taking this much too seriously. It is just harmless banter between two opposing teams. Before, and at the end of the game, regardless of the result, I am sure that the fans of both teams will meet together for a few beers and some lighthearted post match analysis. The germans have a sense of humour and will see the banter for exactly what it is. Fortunately, British football hooliganism has seriosly declined over the past 10 years and these days you are much more likely to here of it in other european countries, including dare I say it Holland where it has become a bit of a problem particularly between the clubs of Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV. Lets hope for a good game on the pitch and no pitch battles off it. Lighten up folks ! Regards Paul

Golf is definately scottish, who else but a scotsman would be wandering around sparse countryside and pick up a stick to then start hitting a stone towards some unknown target and then do it 17 times more just for the fun of it. The only thing I ask is that you don't check out the leaderboard at the moment for scotsman, considering we supposedly invented the game you would think we would have more than a few players who can actually play it. Back on subject though, the Hun term is as I wrote derogatory, would it surprice you to know that the german Tommy is not. I always thought it was short for John Thomas as in huge pen*s but it just goes to show you. The germans and french supposedly just used it as a group name where as we brits decided to come up with an insult for them. Good old brits, lets fly that flag with pride.

There are Nations out there which genuinely hate each other when it comes to sport. A prime example are the Dutch and Germans when it comes to football. It puts the England v Scotland fixture in the shade. The English dont really mean it as its a bit of a laugh, but the Dutch and Germans are another matter. Michael

RE msg 18, CJtill: It would help if we stop writing and talking about "the" Dutch, "the" English, "the" Germans etc. They don't exist. I have nothing against decent Dutch, educated English, well-behaved Germans or a mixture of them. It's the rotten apples who spoil it on bulletin boards, in stadiums - everywhere.

| RE msg 24, denizen: I have no pet moderator and have no issues with any of them. I respect the unpaid work of all active moderators and don't contradict their decisions like some here seem to do out of principle. So, if you have nothing valuable to add here you might as well go back to the kitchen. Or write an email to your uncle whom you supported so fiercely when he tried to get banned for life (and succeeded). RE msg 25: No offence taken, Mrs Hattikins - didn't *you* read what I wrote?! | Don't take it too seriously! An Austrian friend of mine told me they always want to see Germany beaten and I thought they were a Germanic people too! It's not just us - and it's not really about the war/s (don't mention it!) Sure it will be an exciting match for they are both good teams. |

I understand that JohnW but the entertainment seems to be about you guys taking the P out of someone who is not on here to defend himself although knowing DC he wouldn't bother. I will say this for him, he might rub people up the wrong way but he does it on his own and he does it with style, he started this thread trying to point out that we really shouldn't still be using offensive names that stem from in actual fact WW I not 65 years ago, and ends up getting abuse but if he points out a spelling or grammer mistake people get upset with him. Highly enlightening really. I'll remember to avoid a debate with you 3, looks like it is very 1 sided.
