Advice on MOT please

Can anyone tell me whether you have to get an MOT after 3 or 5 years with a new car? Also any recommendations on best place to get MOT done near Alsancak, and also emissions check which I understand has to be done before an MOT. Any advice much appreciated.

It is the emission test that has to be done before the mot and there is only one place to get your mot carried and that is the Police Station in Girne but first of all you have to go to the Tax Office to pay for the mot and get your receipt to show the mot tester. For the mot make sure your car is clean and that you have mud flaps fitted and it should pass with flying colours. Also the mot is every 3 years but I am not sure how old the car has to be for its first mot.

I got the list from the 'Happy Clappy' board - and apparently the 'nicked' it of us in the first place - well, 'borrowed it, anyway...

I think it's approx 3 yrs from date of 1st reg, but not exactly, as you have to follow the chart below - published annually: -

Oh dear, I'm going to be in UK when mine is due - anyone know if I can take it in earlier than the date due? or failing that, roughly how much do they fine you for being 1 week late?

You cannot take it in before your due date, the only thing I can suggest is to get a friend to take it in for you.

The only advice you need for taking car for MOT - make sure it is clean, especially in the engine compartment where they read the engine, chassis number etc. After that upt to the gods as to how much of a check is amde.

We had mud on our car so they told us we needed mud flaps! so clean your car before you go to the mot station and yes you need to do the emissions test first, then go to the tax office and pay for the mot test then go to the Girne police station for the mot test.



MOT's are not the same as in UK, it really depends on how the tester feels on the day. The last time we had a crack on the number plate and was given our mot certificate but told to get a new plate. They never looked at anything else on the car at all!

I am a little confused as was told to go to the garage next to the Mercedes garage in Girne for MOT test, was told this is where they are done?

No its behind the police station if you turn up the road where the mercedes garage is you take the first right its at the end.

My car failed on being dirty and also the exhaust pipe being too long! I took it to my mechanic and he put it up on the ramp and got an angle grinder to the pipe and afterwards used his pressure cleaner to clean the car (did not charge me a penny) but he warned me that I should take it back the same day because you do not get a failure notice and if you leave it until the next day the mot tester will have forgotten about what it failed on and might find something else wrong.

My old Vitara once failed for having scabby paint! - you'll understand why, if you've seen it

When my spray-gun packed up, I resorted to hand-painting the bonnet - and it passed!
