Ada news have announced that 36 unions are striking on Monday, as that is about all of the unions here I guess pretty much everyone will be affected.

Its their last effort in vain, the govbernment will go ahead with her reforms, she has too because tuyrkey is witholding the money. The problem is, will the fovernment be able to pass the necessarry laws in parliament? They are in the minority now but the opposition will not be too keen to pull them down because whoever comes in will have to implement the same unpopular reforms. Either we put our house in order or we perish.

Ismet Msg 6- This is information on the cessation of funds is more of a worry as if the Turkish Government stop supporting North Cyprus it truly will become bankrupt and inflation will be rampant. The Turkish Government and Turkey has been generously bankrolling the TRNC for many years. The idea of a strike is a little quaint and the effects will be temporary (although bad for some people on the day); if Turkey stops it’s support the effects will be far more severe.

Remember that TRNC is under embargoes. Without support it would have died years ago. Turkey doesnt support TRNC for fun, it is a pawn in a bigger game. The players (Erdogan/Gul) and reason for playing the game (EU membership etc) has changed in recent years hence Turkeys changed approach!

Without made up jobs, the majority of normal Cypriots would have had to take up the offer of relocation to UK, Australia, Germany as many did. TRNC would then have been populated by mainland Turks and this would have put Turkey in a different position on the world stage. The fact that normal Cypriots stayed (when Turkey rolled in and stayed after 1974 and due to Turkeys financial support) meant that Turkey could be viewed as liberator and not something more sinister (Taksim plan)!

Turkey is squeezing the TRNC at the moment. Atlas jet (a Turkish company with ties to Abdullah Gul, I hear?) has taken over CTA with the help of Turkey. Interesting! Or maybe ive been watching too many Oliver Stone Movies?

Cyprus as a whole is very important for Turkey for strategical reasons and has been prepared to support Turkish Cypriots financially up to a point. The wages in Cyprus are far higher than those in Turkey. In effect the poor Anatolian has been helping the rich Turkish Cypriots to have fun at their expense. I am aware that turkey helped TCs to become non-productive and rely on help from Turkey but TCs accepted this position very willingly. So now it is time to come down to earth and put our own house in order.

elko2, do you really think that TCs will give in and accept a massive drop in wages and changes to their jobs?

And is the cost of living the same here as it is in say Diyarbakir elko? I think not!

The fact that a lot of this money ends up in the hands of a few at the top is a travesty and that is where the problem lies, this rampant corruption must end. How much does a minister make in TRNC? If only normal Cypriots would rise up and fight this cancer.

It is not a matter of a massive drop in wages or the salary of a few ministers. There is already a very big rift between the civil servants and those working in the private sector. With such a system it is not economical for the private sector to produce anything. All the financial resources coming from Turkey which is huge compared to peanuts we get from EU, it all goes to pay the wages and retirement benefits. Even an ordinary civil servant with no university degree may get anything up to 200,000 TL as a retirement benefit and a retirement salary of 3000+ TL. The current Turkish ambassador to TRNC who will retire soon will have a salary of about 3000 TL and a retirement payout of only 47000 TL. Just make the comparison. A friend, a retired civil servants gets 5300 TL salary and is now objecting to the idea of having to pay tax on it even at very special low levels. No doubt it will increase later. A worker earning over 1300 TL currently pays tax on his earnings. Is it fair?
