I have just met someone who has come back after spending 2 weeks in TRNC.

She loved the Turkish Cypriots who went out of their way to help but her biggest disappointment was difficulty finding somewhere to eat not run by Brits. Are most places now run by ex pats and how long do they remain financially viable ? I must say when I go abroad I like to eat the local food....... unlike visitors to Spain who seem to prefer Burgers/chips etc. Is N Cyprus turning into a Costa ?

Good Grief!

How did they manage that?

Just had 3 weeks out there, went to at least 20 restaurants, not a single one 'British'!

Same in Spain, never eaten anywhere 'British'.

Rob (puzzled)

I'm just as puzzled as Rob, to be honest.

We got back two weeks ago after spending two weeks there and didn't go to one British-run restaurant. What area did they frequent, or did they travel about a bit?

There are several about - more than several, in actual fact - and appear to do a roaring trade in full English breakfast. It's a phenemenon I don't understand. Especially in this heat.

She must have been looking in the wrong place............around Kyrenia /Lapta. We usually go to Jashan's now...admittedly not Cypriot but it suits the heat. I must say the place seems to be swimming in restaurants nowadays. I don't know how they all keep afloat.

I have to agree about the number of restaurants and it seems there's a new one opening every 5 minutes, along with DIY stores. Beats me how they manage to all keep going - except, sadly, they don't.

Perhaps it is more correct to mourn the lack of cypriot food outside of meze, kebabs and kleftico. Restaurants do seem to cater for british tastes fromthe seventies. Or even before;-)

We always avoid Brits like the plague when we are abroad BUT we can't resist Stevie's Sunday Roast - it really does make a change.

I can recommend 'Metran' for totally authentic food - (Tatlisu) - you will eat in a car park but you will have amazing views of the mountains. On one night we had 13 first courses, the food reminded me of Middle Eastern food some of the dishes were very hot!!

So for first courses, a main course and dessert with wine will cost approximately £20. for two.

I agree with these comments - North Cyprus has so many really lovely restaurants that are not run by, or serve English food. The varied choice is amazing!!!
