Dear All,

We are coming to North Cyprus in November.

We are landing to Larnaca Airport and want to rent a car.

I called Avis and they did not allow their cars to be taken to the north.

Anyone know a car hire firm in North that can deliver to Larnaca Airport?

Try http://www.cyprus-car.com

They are based in both North and South.

Here is a copy-paste from their rental terms page:

CUSTOMER QUESTION: Can I drive the vehicles to North Cyprus?

If your rental starts in south Cyprus (eg. Larnaca Airport), you may still drive to North Cyprus (eg. Kyrenia).

You will need to pay for separate insurance at the border (10 CYP for 3 days, open 24/7), because there is no insurance company in south Cyprus that covers accidents in North Cyprus. You may use the following 3 border points to pay for insurance and pass 24/7: Ayios Demotios in Nicosia, Pergamos (Pyla) in Larnaca and Vvisoules Strovilia in Famagusta.

JUST A WORD OF WARNING, AS I UNDERSTAND THE SITUATION, THE INSURANCE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE AT THE BORDER WILL ONLY GIVE YOU THIRD PARTY COVER, SO IS IT WORTH THE RISK? A BETTER ALTERNATIVE WOULD BE TO RENT A CAR FROM THE NORTH AND THEY WILL COLLECT YOU FROM LARNACA FOR APPROX FOURTY POUNDS EACH WAY, TAKE YOU TO THEIR OFFICE TO COLLECT YOUR CAR, THAT WAY NO PROBLEMS IF YOU HAVE A PRANG! WE HAVE DONE THIS A COUPLE OF TIMES WITH SUN RENT A CAR,( BOOKED ON LINE) AND HAVE BEEN DELIGHTED WITH THEIR SERVICE

Also, buying the insurance at the border can eat into your precious holiday time, so it's probably best to get the car hire firm to collect you. Then you can let someone else navigate through south Cyprus, while you sit back and enjoy the scenery!

I have just been across to N/Cyprus house hunting for 8 days. Flew into PAPHOS hired a car via this site which cost 73 pounds for the 8 days and was a double upgrade. No problem at the border had to pay 15 pounds insurance this covers up to 30 days.

When you say this site, who do you mean exactly? We are flying in to Paphos next week and I really interested to know who you hired your car from and, incidently, what you hired before it was upgraded.

Cheers

mountain edge,

Go to car hire link on home page, then click on Larnaca transfers, at the bottom of the page, click on Cyprus car hire portal . Fill in your details and get a quote.

I requested a group C car but was upgraded to a group B2 which was a 5 door Opal Astra.

My hire car was less for 8 days hire, as a return taxi trip from the South to the North offered under other headings.

If you pay 30 pounds plus each way (to the airport in the south) you still will have to pay at least 12 pounds per day hire in the north.

If I missed you I hope this helps others.

Take a look at message 3

Would you drive a car in the UK that would cost over £8000 to replace on 3rd party insurance, I'm sure the answer will be no.

So why do it in Cyprus where the standard of driving is poor.

If you go ahead and hire in the south I just hope for your sake that you don't have a prang in the North of the island, you could find it very costly.

We have also booked a hire car from sunrentacar and they are sending taxi to lanarka airport for us £25.00 one way. Does anyone know what the drive down to Alcansak is like from Nicosia. We are arriving early hours of morning due to flight change and am a little worried as it seems to be a mountain road. A colleague travelled this mountain road a few years ago and said it was treacherous with no lights???

Hi keen buyer,

The drive to Alsancack from Nicosia is mainly along a dual carriageway. When you get to Girne the road is a main road but is very busy during the day. you should have no problem at night. It is dead straight.

You may be thinking of the route going over 5 Finger Mountain which is the quickest route from Ercan. This road also has been greatly improved and poses no problem.

Just returned from N Cyprus, and was a little worried about Driving over there for the first time, but hey, whats the big deal? I was expecting nightmare drivers attacking from all angles, but quite honestly found it dead easy. The majority of drivers are very curteous, and it was a more laid back style of driving, better than the normal rat race coming home from work on a friday afternoon in the UK. The maximum speed limit is 100kmh on major roads, and I found that the majority of drivers stuck to that limit ( DB take note ) You just have to watch out for the old guys in equally old left hand drive vehicles, who obviously have a limited view when driving on the left hand side of the road.

And the third party insurance thing........That means that if YOU cause an accident..You end up paying for the damage. Thats fair enough, if you are not that a confident driver where you think that You may cause an accident ,you are not fit to be on the road anyway and need to take some more lessons !

oh great, thank you, that's put my mind at rest. It is a few years since my colleague was there and it was from Ercan to Acapulco so it was probably the route over the 5 finger mountain. I was having nightmares about driving along a mountainous dirt track with no lights and sheer drops at 3 in the morning. Never thought I would say thank god for motorways!! Looking forward to seeing N Cyprus for the first time in a few weeks time.
