my friend was over charged almost 90tl ( 89.99tl ) yesterday on her food bill at starlings supermarket , she thought that her bill was high so stood outside and checked it ..there was 89.99tl on it that she couldnt understand ! she took the whole trolley back in and asked what was that price ! the guy in the veg dept said it was "nuts " my friend explained she didnt have any nuts in her trolley ...but he insisted that he has seen her put them in ! finally everything was taken out and at the bottom was Potatoes ...6TLs worth ..she had been charged 89.99TL for them !! how can that be done when things are scanned ?a mistake ? i dont know ...but we will check our bills thoroughly from now on !

lilyross, thats terrible, as similar has happened to us but potatoes (veg & nuts) are not scanned they are put on scales and the cashier selects a "charge per kilo" from the register. It is hard to believe that the cashier mistook potatoes for nuts ! which Starling please although I fear all the same not just Starling !

Lilyross do yourself a favour and go to Dolmaci instead. It is up the road that is nearly opposite Starling, the one with the yapi market on the corner.

I was overcharged in Debenhams food hall in lefkosia. I now take a calculator with me and total my shopping as I select it. Last time I corrected her again, it was not much but when I said what I knew to be the correct amount she came back with a figure 4 cents less than mine.

I check my bill here in the UK when I shop at Morrisons, last week with Aubergines £1 each or 2 for £1.50 go through the check out I was charged £1 each, went to Customer services had it checked with an assistant, the offer had finished the day before! the price was still there so I asked them take it down while I watched. I go round many times and take prices off the shelf if I find them wrong, they have a bad habit of stacking a smaller item above the pricing of a larger item on offer when it is sold out, I have complained many times but it still happens.

paddywack,

They always pounce on your small change like Vultures - it's because there's never enough in circulation -

and while some 'incidents' are simply mistakes - as with the wrong 'code number' in the potatoes/nuts case, others are downright fraud - perpetrated by thieving till operators. Thank God that they're mostly Honest, as are most folks...

littleme / Jeannie,

Frank Gillin (of http://www.frankandjoan.com ) once did that, and when the girl protested, he said "Well, YOU gave them to me..."

I've often felt tempted!

Yes, the practice does seem to be less prevalent now, but it was rife at one time!

tell you what they do tho which is annoying. They keeps slipping the old ytl coins in with my change. I normally just put my change straight in my pocket but I've started checking now. Got a drawer full of the old coins. Any way of changing them?

No WS, I'm not a bully. Insults coming from you, yet again. If you look at the postings on this thread you might notice that we have problems aplenty re. supermarkets. Importing them from UK seems rather a bit too much, especially when the veracity is questionable. Who would continue using a store that continually overcharges, (no query mark because not a question requiring an answer)

My remarks aren't meant to hurt and shouldn't offend those with a clear conscience. They are mostly "tongue in cheek". Please accept my apology if I have caused offence.

I shop in Staring all the time, as well as Ileli and Lemar - and I have never been short changed that I know of. Maybe the odd Kurus here and there, but nothing more than that. Even if we are doing a big shop we always check things when we get back home, as we pack them in the cupboard, to make sure we haven't missed anything. Always spot on.

Always found the staff in any supermarket we use very honest and helpful!!

I like the free stuff with reasonable spends.

Wine, biscuits, cooking oil, (although I do ask for a swap when the oil is offered), bags of crisps, jar of coffee. Can’t exactly remember all the stuff but don’t think I have ever been done.............too much, on prices or change.

laptamike,

What is the problem with old coins. They are still legal until at least 31 December.

I am going to comment on original post and ask the question, did you not have an idea how much you were spending to be 90tl out is an awful lot. If your estimate was spending 45tl and it came to 50tl then you may not question but 90tl........... I am sorry but I would be spending 2-300tl to even think I may be 90 over charged.

Have on occasions found, because of change issues that I get the odd lira out but by same token I have had the bill corrected the other way many times.

Re: 29 and 34

The YTL are no longer legal tender (as of 31 December 2009) but the central bank will exchange them till 31st December 2010.

swany,

the old ytl coins are still in general circulation until end of 2010, I can assure you that you will get them in change on a regular basis.

We were here in Dec 2009, may be you were not, and were thankful to hear the announcement becuase there was still millions of lira still around. In addition at that time there was insuffiecent tl in circulation to satisfy demand.

If you do not believe take some to any shop or bank and see what happens, they will be accepted.

Just back from Starling where one of the girls on the till is definitely on the fiddle. I put my shopping up she scanned it all except for the cooked checked (10tl) she added this on a calculator and told me that was the amount. I then decided to pay on my card so guess what she then took the chicken from the bag and scanned it giving the proper price.!!! I saw her doing the same the other day with a customer who had a tin of SMA milk (9.45tl) Time the manager did spot checks on these girls tills as by stealing from the company she is in effect pushing the prices up!

nurseawful. And will you be shopping at Starling again? Denizen reckons I tell lies and asks why do I still keep shopping at Morrisons, I say it is my choice but she still tries to put me down by saying the veracity is questionable.

Msg 9

UK Supermarkets have to hornour the price that is displayed unless there is a date on the displayed ticket saying when the offer price finishes.

This happened to me in ASDA wih a DVD but I stood my ground and argued the date was covered up

Got it at the reduced price saved £6

msg 41. Yes there was a date the offer finished the day before but because the sign was still there I argued and got the offer price. I don't have a problem shopping at Morrisons (my nearest supermarket) because I check my bill and even if the difference is say 10p I go to the customer service and get it back, better in my pocket than theirs.

Yes I will still shop at Starling but will now always insist on the receipt and if anything not on or the price I pay is different will ask to talk to the manager!
