Hi we have friends over and I want to take them out for Kleftico within the central Girne and not sure where`s best so any recommendations would be most helpful.

Padisha, the road opposite the Colony. They do a good Kleftico and a peaceful courtyard setting considering your right in town.

I had amazing kleftico at Bellapais Gardens a few weeks ago, and the views are breathtaking while you eat.

F&F at Alsancak, same block of "shops" as Taj Mahal. Only done on Wed & Sat nights.

There are places that offer kup kebab, proper Turkish name rather than Greek, 7 nights a week if so in general avoid them because it will not be fresh cooked that day in firin.

I did a good kleftico last sunday. Melted in the mouth. My own recipe. Didn't bother with the potatoes because I was cooking them seperately as roast taties.

Recipe.

Leg of lamb cut into individual portions

Beyaz Peynir

salt and pepper

fresh rosemary

olive oil

1/2 glass red wine

Cut holes in each portion of lamb with a sharp knife. Stuff a little of the cheese, garlic and rosemary in each hole

Sprinkle with olive oil, salt and pepper

Place in a terracotta pot with a lid with the wine or make a parcel out of tin foil.

Roast for 4 hours at 160c

Eat and enjoy.

Bellapais Gardens - the best Kleftico I have ever had

Buffavento Restaurant by Five Finger Mountain - second best.....but still excellent.

Padisha used to be great but not so good of late

The 'something gardens' by the fire station is Pasabache - and anything you have there is excellent - but you probably have to order Kleftico the day before.

If you really want to experience the best, then you will have to drive a little out of Kyrenia to Kormakitis (Koruçam)

Yorgo's restaurant does the best proper Kleftico i know of.

Apart from the ingredients & cooking method, more important is the meat chosen for Kleftico.

Yorgo's is actually the village butcher in daytime and restaurant in the evening and the meat they cook Kleftico comes from their own flock which tastes much better than meat sold in towns due to the fact that they graze natutrally in that area of Cyprus.

Word of warning....They cook Kleftico only on order...so a phone call is required earlier in the day to order Kleftico.

rest of the kebabs on the menu can be ordered anytime.

try Erols in Ozankoy, he does a good one but you'll need to call and ask him when he is doing it, he also grows a load of stuff in his garden

The Lodge in Catalkoy does a great kleftiko on Sundays as well as a fabulous doner kebap which the owner Ilhan prepares himself, also on Sundays.

No offence intended towards iceman as regards Yorgos but went there 2 years ago and found the place un - hygenic and did not rate the food much. Its more of a experience rather than good food and in todays climate taking into consideration recent Greek propaganda....

I WOULD NOT SPEND A SINGLE, POUND, KURUS, EURO OR DOLLAR IN ANY GREEK OWNED ESTABLISHMENT AND WILL ALMOST CERTAINLY AVOID ANY FORM OF DEALINGS WITH THE DARK SIDE !!

What planet are you from? for gods sake??

Kormakitis (Koruçam) is a Maronite village, they are NOT Greek Cypriots!!!

Do you know what Maronite is?? who they are?

educate yourself a little before you pass on any comments!!

we all do it but it is to order, we have a slightly differnt version, we use the very old pot but infuse with red wine herbs and spices, i love the taste of the potatoes done this way, the meat falls away. have tried it in many places as i love it xxxxxxx

I am not reffering to the village I am making reference to the establishment which is owned and run by Maria alongside her mother and her aunties who are Greek Cypriots and live in South Cyprus.

Maybe you should educate yourself a little, learning to understand what you read maybe a good place to start.

Yes I do know what a Moronite is and know exactly who they are after all I am a Turkish Cypriot...

Haven't been there but I was told by a market stall holder in Guzelyurt (lived in Cyprus all is life) that Yorgos' in Korucam is the best.

Will have to go one day to try it out.
