If I had a bucket of water for every time so there was another "pipeline is definitely going ahead" story, I'd have a swimming pool full File in same category as "direct flights will be starting next year" Anyway, I suppose it keeps the voters happy for a few minutes every time they read the story....

You have t remember this is a young country, mistakes will be made, confusion will reign, and most things wont be got right the first time. Contrary to what the scuttlebutt preaches i think things are getting better albeit slowly. One example the nearly completed Alsancak/Kyrenia relief road-took some time but now only 10 mins into town. The water pipe line has been talked about for some time and one reason its has stumbled is the question of patents. A good friend of mine who works offshore tells me the laying of the pipe could only take two weeks (mind you the infrastructure each end will take longer) Again be positive. Negative and sometimes vindictive comments do nothing to further the TRNC case for recognition and certainly do nothing to support the tourist industry. More tourists =more income=better facilities=better life for all.

Hippo, "One example the nearly completed Alsancak/Kyrenia relief road-took some time but now only 10 mins into town." Yeah but as they started allowing businesses direct access from this relief road how long before infill renders this road as congested as its forerunner? Don't get me wrong we love it here but how many times can you shoot yourself in the foot before the doctor declares you lame?

Spot on Groucho. Like the many relief and ring roads around towns in UK where industrial and business premises proliferate so that locals "in the know" drive straight through the town centre to avoid worse congestion on the new facilities !

As far as I am aware this will be a 4 year project. Construction of the "Feeder" Dam has begun / will begin in Turkey. A large dam will be constructed in TRNC, to accept and distribute the water and will take two years to complete. Newly "invented" polypropylene piping will be submerged in the Med to a depth of 250m. and water will be pumped from TR to TRNC. There is also a "possibility" of electric cables being used along side the water pipe. If this happens then there will surely be a change in the Eco system of TRNC. Possibly for the better!!

Message 14 Not only is this a young country but it has only a tiny population from which to draw its political leaders. The whole country is smaller than most UK towns and foreigners are not eligible for office or to vote. In the UK we have 60+ million people to choose from but we still get a lot of total duffers in positions of power - at the national level never mind the county/town level. I remember how late were the Dome, the M4, the Scottish Parliament building, identity cards etc. etc. etc. - and this in a country with far greater resources of finance and skills. So give them a break and a bit of encouragement - they have a lot to contend with because they are pressed from 3 sides:- Turkey to limit their spending, their own population to increase their spending, and the ROC over everything.

"We will deploy all assets at our disposal to make Turkish Cyprus a point of attraction. It is our historical promise to protect the rights, freedoms, equality and interests of the Turkish Cypriots," Erdoğan said. The Turkish prime minister reiterated that Turkey favored a fair and a lasting settlement of the Cyprus issue, adding that the main goal of ongoing peace talks between the two Cypriot leaders was to reach a comprehensive solution to the problem by the end of 2010. "Turkey shares this goal and we will closely watch the negotiation process as a guarantor country. We expect that the Greek Cypriot side will follow suit with the same constructive attitude of the Turkish Cypriots. We stand in complete solidarity with the Turkish Cypriots, who, I believe, will overcome all obstacles," Erdoğan said. I guess now it matters little what the "Peace Talks" will bring. Good for TRNC & Turkey. When do we get the "Plane" pipeline to cure the other problem? Good for y

Could the greeks stop this as they stop everything else happening. If this happens then I bet they will want to be friends in the future. I thought the problem with the med and the pipeline is that it is a very deep ocean and would be difficult to lay.

The pipeline will 'float' 250 metres below the surface (message 17) so the depth and irregularity of the bottom is irrelevant.. Theoretically the GCs could stop the pipeline. As they are the only recognised government then arguably the coastal waters around alll of Cyprus are theirs to administer. But if they tried to stop it, and if the Turkish Navy didn't intervene, then I think it would be the death of all their political hopes as most of the world sympathy would be with the TCs and Turkey. Stopping J-Lo would be nothing compared to this.

I sincerely hope the aim of piped water is achieved for the benefit of all but I have read and listened to these detailed plans since the 1960s so perhaps not in my lifetime.

Me too. I have been hearing about this project since I arrived on the island. First of all the Israelis were to pay for it , since there would have been an extension of the pipeline to Israel and then and then and then.............. However , Now, I really believe it is a possibility. I have been reliably informed that a chemical company in Turkey have been producing a "New" polymer for the construction of the pipeline and I have seen a cartographer's map of the proposed dam in TRNC. BUT , clearly, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. When "they" start building the dam here, then the probability will increase immeasurably. As for the GC's trying to stop this project, not even they are that short-sighted.

MartinM/Msg17: I don't know where you sourced your information, but mine says that the pipeline will be suspended mid-air, by newly patented 'sky hooks'. As for the 'infrastructure' the TRNC end - agreements have been drawn up and are shortly to be signed involving an initial 10 year contract to 'put a man on with a bucket'.

martinM/Msg 24: 'As for the GC's trying to stop this project, not even they are that short-sighted.' Did you not know that the Greek [Cypriot] Orthodox Church have issued a mandate that forbids GC's to drink, wash in, irrigate with, or otherwise utilise 'Muslim' water?

I loos like the deal has been signed as this has appeared on BRT "A 450 million USD framework agreement was signed to transport water from Turkey to Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The "intergovernmental framework agreement on meeting the water requirement of the TRNC" was signed by Turkish Deputy Prime Minister - State Minister In Charge of Cyprus Affairs Cemil Cicek and TRNC Prime Minister Irsen Kucuk during a ceremony held in Lefkosa yesterday. President Dervis Eroglu also attended the ceremony. Speaking after the signing ceremony, President Eroglu said water and electricity are two strategically important projects for the TRNC. He also added that the TRNC would be developed faster thanks to the water and electricity brought from Turkey. For his part, Prime Minister Kucuk noted that the 75 million cubic meters of water to be transported annually from Turkey would change the TRNC's appearance.
