A stray dog turned up at our villa today. I came round from the back of the villa to the front and it was lying under the table outside. Had little luck coaxing it away. It just has a wander around for a few mins and comes back. It appears to be house trained but doesn't appear to be anyones pet. Very scruffy and I think its got bad guts cos its faeces is very sloppy and orange. If it is still here tomorrow I'm thinking of taking it to KAR. Can anyone give me directions to them please? Thanks Mike

Hi Mike, I could give you directions to Kar but I think you would be wasting your time taking it there. Apparently they only take bitches with puppies or pregnant bitches. Sometimes they will take injured animals. I cannot blame them as they are always overcrowded with stray animals. The butlers wife

Hi Mike, I appreciate your concern for this animal. I believe that KAR's policy with strays (unless pregnant or with puppies as stated in msg 2) is to treat any ailments, 'Tag' them, and then return them to the area in which they were found. i know that it doesn't sound very charitable, but they have limited resources, so you might well find yourself feeding 'chummy' eventually anyway Keep smiling, it only gets worse from here!

thanks for all the advice. I'll just wait and see what happens. If it's still here tomorrow I might give it a good wash. Probably won't like that ;-) I'll have to try and talk my mum into us keeping it. I'm not adverse to the idea apart from the responsibility. (Would mean it being kenneled etc when we're out of the country.) Even though we're here for good now there will be times when we're back in old Blighty for a few weeks and things like that. I seem to be an animal magnet, even back in UK I was always getting cats and dogs following me home and then not wanting to go. There was one dog, he was with us for a few days so I called the council. They sent a van round and they knew the dog, and dog knew them, jumped straight in the van. Apparently it's forever running away from home. (Must have been a nasty owner :-(

update: still here sitting on the garden wall at the top of the steps to the entrance keeping guard. Every time it hears something it goes to investigate. I wan't to keep it/her/him (not checked ;-) and I think its growing on my mum cos it was sat watching her at the back patio door earlier and my mum was making oooohhhh sounds. Doesn't appear to be one of the dogs that bark all night but will let you know in the morning.

won't let that happen Lil. If its gone in the morning though then its not our problem. If its still here then I'm going to give it a shampoo, something to eat and think about getting its injections etc at the vets. How much does it cost for all the basic stuff at the vets? (injections, de-fleaing etc)

We have the same problem a stray arrive (2 actually) but this one decided to adopt our site, she has been to KAR and has a red tag in her ear, she is abeautiful cross Springer and Pointer we think! and has a lovely temperament, she wont come inside the apartment and when she follows you to the Gym she stays outside, she obvioulsy has been well trained, never barks and loves scratchy rolling on our Astro turf. BUT she cannot stay on site as some owners will complain. If anyone can help this dear lady whom has been named Carrie as her tail never stops going around like a carousel please let me know. All she needs is come love and care which she is getting - but she has to go we are trying desperately to find a new home but ultimately if an onwer complains she will get put somewhere else it is such a shame please please can anyone help. Please email me if you can help

Well done Mike, we have also recently been adopted by a stray, she turned up about 4 weeks ago, we already have a rescue dog and really wasn`t looking for another as we live in an apartment, but we left water out for her and gave her tit-bits, she was so friendly, when some other apartment owners arrived they took her to KAR as we thought she was only a pup, anyway they neutered her, dewormed her fed her up kept her for about 2 weeks and have now sent her back to this area, there is no way we could have another dog in the apartment but we feed her etc., and she comes for walks with our dog each day and seems quite happy, there is no way we would see her go hungry and neither of us go back to the U.K. together so their will always be one of us looking out for her but just hope one of us doesn`t weaken and allow her in the apartment as it might cause problems with other owners. If I had a property with my own garden it would be full of cats and dogs, nicer than some people!!! Lesleyb

can't post photos on here Pipie I don't think. Send me an email on mparkemcr@googlemail.com and I'll send you them. He's still scruffy. Going to get a flea collar and grooming brush tomorrow and try to give him a good shampoo. Gave him 1/2 tin of dog food and a couple of the homemade doggy bics from market for his tea. Loved it. He's lying at my feet at the moment. Quite content. As long as i'm sat with him he doesn't bark but if i'm not and he sees a dog on the lane outside, or any other noise around the villa he will investigate and bark. Trying to get him out of the habit of barking. (Sleeps under the patio table most of the day because it's shaded and often gets a breeze) My mum took him for a walk earlier. By the way, because of otherwelming support for the name Mutley, he is now Mutley.

Thanks Jeannie, it all depends on Mutley. He might decide to leave. I'm going to the Perova garden centre tomorrow to get a few bits (they do pet stuff). If he's still here in a couple of weeks I'll get him a bed. Still here October I'll get him a kennel before it gets too cold. He's well away to sleep now, just tried moving my foot cos getting cramp and he didn't wake up

bought a flea collar and brush from Perova garden centre and the nice lady very kindly gave me a sample of her dry dog food. The flea collar actually smells quite nice. Gave Mutley half/half (tinned/dry) for his tea. Seemed to enjoy it. Doesn't like me brushing near his face, keeps biting the brush ;-) Just have to try and clean it with a warm cloth I suppose. Noticed they have muzzels aswell. Wonder if it would be cruel to get one and put him on at night to stop him barking and eating poison when he goes for his nocturnal walks when everyone is asleep.

he doesn't appear to be a stray. He's got a bad back leg unfortunately. Think he's pulled a muscle or something. Very cute, but very timid. Follows me around like Muttly. Was trying not to feed him to see if he would go home but he wouldn't leave so gave him a bit of tea. He and Mutley get on like a house on fire, virtually inseperable now.

| Mike, concerning the muzzle, if you leave it on him without supervision, he will most likely be able to get it off, and lose it. It would be a better idea to dog proof the garden, to stop these nocturnal sojourns, and also much better for the puppy too...a full GSD is highly likely to be stolen for breeding, and/or fighting, especially if he is a full male. all you need do is put up some chain link fencing, and cover it with a climber.... (btw, muzzles are not cruel in the slightest, and should be used when you go out together at all times to avoid poisoning, however, unsupervised muzzling is not recommended) Hope this helps somewhat. | Mike, looks like you are a doggy magnet. We've got three lovely bitches but that's it I'm afraid. They act like a pack and see off any other stragglers coming down the road. Wouldn't swap them for the world now, but a big commitment and a big responsibilty. |

Keep in mind mike to teach a dog (puppy) a new command you must tell it 30 times ,and to fix something wrong 90 times. usually takes more less time than to teach a human being anything. PS: at this time i have 10 dogs

Mike, We were advised by the vets to use only dry dog food.. The thinking is that it's a more balanced nutritional diet than the tins but you must make sure there is plenty of fresh water available at all times. The tinned variety attracts cockroaches too...

I can only start to imagine the cockroach problems you'd incur if you followed the BARF diet for your dog... I did say in preference to the tins not in preference to anything else but I know people who prepare all sorts of exotic foods for their dogs which don't look fit as fiddle for all their trouble. Having said that our dog is enjoying lots of fresh fruit in this heat - melon wedges are a particular favourite with no ill-effects.

My mum has called the puppy Efes ;-) Really used to us now, just been playing with him a few minutes ago. I put a leash on him earlier, no probs. Try to take him for a walk he just won't budge. Managed to get him in the car and take him to an abandoned beach for a walk. Had to take the lead off though. He walked to heel most of the time anyway. He's so cute, follows me everywhere, gets upset if I'm not within a few yards of him. (strangely enough though he doesn't mind me going to the shop)

If you have an aversion to tinned dog food (my dogs wont touch it) then you could always get chicken gizzards, livers and hearts....they are much cheaper than tinned and dried stuff...boil them up for 20 mins or so....fresh nutritional and more natural....smells a bit when boiling...but you are also left with a meaty stock for all your other cooking needs. I also prefer Mutley... DD

My vet told me never to give the dogs liver, hearts, etc...far too much protein in them for the dogs bodies to be able to break down.

We use chicken gizzards. The vet said that chicken livers are a little too much for their digestive systems. Plus I hate cooking the hearts. No need to boil them, you can put them in a pan with a very small amount of olive oil or sunflower oil. Or you can put them on the bbq or the foreman. If you have any left over pasta which can be added all the better.

found out efes suffers from car sickness today. I know at least not to take him in the car soon after he's had a meal. He threw up. Made me throw up cleaning it up ;-) At least he's used to his lead now, sort of.

Hi, had to give Mutley away. Can't explain why on here. Efes is the german shepherd puppy who turned up a couple of days after Mutley. He is very clean and doesn't bark at night so my mum tolerates him being in my bedroom. He's very timid, runs away from strangers (but will bark and attack anyone/anything trying to come into his domain). He's very loving, gets upset if I'm more than a few feet from him. He's like a whippet, our villa is quite big but he can sprint round it in 10 seconds hehe (Spider, I moved over with my mother nearly 3 months ago, my father is still working in UK but will be over Sept for a holiday)
