Zero, Stops the water filling up the head and making your feet stick out at the other end! OR Stops the water getting into the inner ear and causing an irritation - regardles of type of water by the way, fresh, sea or muddy - or deafness (temporary) and pain. Should not be used when diving (under not into) in the water but ok for normal surface swimming. Woody, Only place I know of is - here we go: On Foot!! - Head down the main street in Girne with the Round Tower on your right hand side. Turn down the next right hand road turning heading towards the sea. Towards the bottom of that road there is a left hand turning. Past that turning - maybe 30 mtrs - is a fishing/sports/etc shop on the left hand side. They sell ear plugs! Good luck.

All chemist shops here stock ear plugs, unfortunately the TRNC allow unqualified pool plant operators to treat private swimming pools and it is not just 'any water' that can cause this type of ear infection ( Otitis Externa ) only contaminated water, this includes wrongly treated pool water. In some, most extreme, cases not only the ear passage ways but also the bones can become infected. If you experience pain when you move your jaw or a bright green discharge ( not joking ) seek out qualified medical aid who can give you S.Antibiotic. Otitis Media, middle ear infection is totally different and is usually after a cold virus. Sticking objects into the ear can also cause Otitis Media problems......I'll leave the rest of that to the JOKERS on the forum

Oh dear, my light hearted anecdote seems to have upset Tasgirl - apologies as it was meant as just that - a light hearted anecdote! Not a recommendation for anyone to try it, not as a means of detracting from the original post and believe me it isn't something he does on a regular basis, it was a one off to lighten up a very heavy going "party". So once again apologies to all you karaoke kings (and queens) out there, no offence was meant!

The middle ear infection, known as 'Mediterranean Ear', that is so common - in fact at epidemic proportions in all Cyprus, is easily contracted from public and private swimming pools and the crowded beaches that are so popular with tourists and locals alike. The most successful medication, which can actually neutralise the infection within half an hour, if treated early enough, is, to my knowledge, unavailable in TRNC - it is called 'OTOSPORIN'. In the South, there was a common trick perpetrated [on unsuspecting expats] and especially on tourists by doctors. Most hotels have a doctor affiliated to them. The tourist would visit the doctor, who would prescribe [on maybe 2-3 visits] ineffective antibiotic drops - then, on the tourist's last visit, just prior to flying home - terrified to do so because of the excruciating pain - would prescribe 'OTOSPORIN', which of course he knew all along was the proprietary and certain cure. At CYŁ40, the doctors had very 'nice little earner'!
